Including those on green cards etc. This will surely cause the tide to finally turn against the regime

Where did you see this?

Kelta · 09/04/2026 21:32

Headline news on cnn

Its not something new. They have always been required to register for the draft, but it was a form they had to fill in. Its just changed to happening automatically now when they turn 18 so it saves all the paperwork. Its symbolic. Not a big deal

Halfblindbunny · 09/04/2026 21:34

They have always had to register they are just automating the system. Likely been in the pipeline for a while as an automated system will need quite a bit of organising and back ground work. The headline writers are just making it seem a bigger deal than it is

NoisyBrickDog · 09/04/2026 21:36

Why is it just open to men?
Shouldn't this be open for women too....?

Kelta · 09/04/2026 21:36

Ah, I didn’t realise that

Yes but its a relic of the Vietnam War and since its only symbolic no one is going to be bothered to change it

Although they have changed it since registration is automatic from December

Yeah not new. 18 year old males have always had to do this (well maybe not always but for decades)?
It's just going to be automatic now instead of filling out the form.
It's causing a lot of controversy because apparently the US government claim it's too "complicated" to automatically register people to vote (so those without photo ID will have difficulty registering) but amazingly they have the details of every 18 year old male in the country so they can register them for a draft.
🤔

At least the US has an army the UK army is embarrassing.

Interesting timing.

The world would be so much better if, instead of sending citizens to war, the leaders of the warring countries were put in a stadium and fought each other to the death. Just think of the lives that would be saved: millions probably.
I bet President Fart would be a lot more deserving of that FIFA Peace Prize if he had to actually put himself in danger instead of others.

Agree
If you’re making a change to the system you make all the required changes in line with the Equalities Act

But you need women left behind to have the babies to replace those killed in action.

I don’t know about the US but in the U.K. that’s not a consideration

It was a slightly tongue in cheek comment.
Apparently it was encouraged (not officially I don't think...but within society) way back in the first world war.
