Do you read magazines? Recommend one to me!

Are there any good magazines out there?

I’m early fifties, teenage kids, like good clothes but not necessarily ‘fashion’, like a bit of make up but not too extreme, love books, movies, bit of gardening, cooking, travel, decorating a room in my house every few years….

I like an interesting read but don’t need to be hugely challenged, bit of a feminist but not militant, on a reasonable income but don’t have loads left over to spend on fripperies.

I find magazines are either obsessed with just one of the above topics or are full of items and recommendations I can’t afford so don’t really interest me…

Can anybody recommend anything?

I like the simple things magazine very slow living but has plenty about gardening and some recipes as well

I read Country Life and find it wonderfully eclectic. It’s also good value, really independent and weekly. It is my little treat.

Will I need a Barbour jacket and Labrador to read that? 😂 That one has not crossed my radar at all - will have a peek on my WH Smith recon mission…

@ChloeCannotCanCan The name is so off-putting but I think you may find the content better than you imagine or it used to be. Red could be worth a try too. Some interesting features but fashion and beauty picks lean expensive/designer these days.

I’m 42 and had this issue. I’m too old for Cosmo, not into fashion or beauty enough for Glamour or Vogue, not into the Woman’s Own type lightweight magazines or the celeb gossip ones. I tried a few last year and found I really enjoy Good Housekeeping. Interviews with interesting women and various articles that seem right for my age (at least I’m at the bottom end of the age they’re aimed at).

I grabbed a Cosmo in a panic at the airport last year and was genuinely appalled at one of the ‘relationship’ articles. Pearls were clutched on that flight….

I haven’t no - I’ve always put it in the ‘made for older women’ category but I think I may need to revisit that now I’m getting on a bit…

The same may go for things like Woman and Home and Good Housekeeping - I always associated them with my mother but maybe I need to be a bit more open minded

I’m on my 40s and have read Red for about 20 years. I don’t think of it as being in the same category as Good Housekeeping etc at all. I would say its target audience is 30s-50s. A bit varied month by month but I enjoy the book reviews, home section, travel, fitness and some of the features. The fashion’s too high end for me! I also subscribe to Sainsbury’s magazine, which is great for food and travel.

ay30916 · 09/04/2026 19:12

Oh I think I’m going to go for a £6 good housekeeping subscription then cancel before it renews.

Darklane · 09/04/2026 19:16

Prima
Bit of everything, fashion but not high end or too trendy, beauty, cooking, gardening, a knitting pattern & a free proper paper sewing pattern every month.

@ChloeCannotCanCan- Barbours optional, but it sounds as though you already have pearls so you’ll fit right in!

Imsixtyandiknowit · 09/04/2026 19:19

Red magazine is quite good. I’m late 40s and have been reading it for at least 20 years. Also like good housekeeping, always grab is when getting my hair done.

ChloeCannotCanCan · 09/04/2026 19:35

Good Housekeeping saw me coming - 6 issues for £6.99 and a free Trinny eyeshadow… Now to wait till the end of April for it to arrive!

I will go and explore some of the other options you all suggested while I wait - thanks everyone!

Oohhh, I’ll go check out Simple Things, thanks

It’s a great magazine. Very different. I always find something new in it . A website or book I’ve never heard of for example . It’s lovely in hard copy.. printed on high quality paper . There’s no fashion or beauty advice or diet crap.

Bring back the laugh emoji 🤣 honestly it makes me laugh that magazine so much. Theres not so much old toilet rolls to become a make up brush holder in the fate and fortune but lots of blurry pics apparently depicting "my long lost dead hamsters spirit" and always a haunted doll! Come on lassies i canny be the only one reading take a break fate or fortune! 🤣🤣

I know it’s not for everyone but I like Closer magazine. I love sitting and reading it. Nice to have a change from a phone/tablet. I’m not interested in the online versions, I like the paper copy!

It has celebrity gossip, fashion, home, money, health, food/recipes, beauty, puzzles, tv guide/reviews.
It has everything, not just trashy celeb stuff. I’ve read it for about 20yrs and still enjoy it. I’m 40.

YellingAway · 10/04/2026 07:18

I like Grazia, it has a little bit of everything although I still miss Marie Claire from it’s hey day.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 10/04/2026 07:54

I used to spend a fortune on magazines but I came to realise I was just flicking through them. And they are ££££££.

So now I only buy Christmas issues because they give me the warm and fuzzies!

Rubyupbeat · 10/04/2026 08:21

New internationalist, which is world wide politics and great articles on people, also National geographic, I love the photos, just breathtaking.
And....guilty pleasures are Take a break and chat, I get these free with my kindle unlimited.

hahabahbag · 10/04/2026 08:25

Not really a magazine, not glossy but I subscribe to private eye. Mix of humour, news and investigative journalism. Goofs classifieds too, found 2 holiday lets through it

Poppy61 · 12/04/2026 20:24

ChloeCannotCanCan · 09/04/2026 19:03

But then I have to read lots and lots of news which is absolutely depressing 😬

Find a friend who reads the papers and then passes the supplements on to you 😉

PomegranateVase · 12/04/2026 20:49

I like Hello Fashion magazine. Aside from this, Red is quite good but I find some of the content a little boring sometimes.

I used to love Cosmopolitan magazine back in the day, but have bought a few editions in recent years and found it to be a mixture of not very relevant to me any longer and quite boring.

I think there is a real gap in the market for women who are aged around 30+. I find Good Housekeeping etc far too old for me.
