Self catering holiday accommodation- leave as you find it

We have been staying at a holiday let (not Air bnb) and have been sent instructions for our checkout at 10am on Saturday, which say we must “leave it as we found it”. The list of required tasks includes vacuuming round, cleaning the kitchen, bathroom etc. I expected to be required to empty bins and run dishwasher but this seems excessive? The email says please complete the checkout list before 10am to make way for our housekeeping team. So surely they are going to vacuum etc anyway?

Are you paying a cleaning fee ? If so I would definitely query.

There no cleaning fee listed, it was just an overall hire charge. It does say if you don’t clean the barbeque you’ll be charged an extra £30 housekeeping fee.

If there is a "housekeeping team" coming in, they don't expect pristine levels of cleaning, they just don't expect mud everywhere, food on the floor, soap splattered all over the bathroom, stains on the toilet ... Basically they want it left as you'd expect your own house to be on an average day, not in a filthy condition.

No chance. I've had it with cheeky owners expecting me to do their housekeeping.
I will leave it tidy, put the dishwasher on and empty bins. No stripping beds or hoovering.

KeepScrapingBy · 09/04/2026 17:47

Were you told about this before you booked?

It’s normal to empty the bins, empty fridge, wash up and put away dishes, mop up any spills, and put furniture back how it was originally.

Anything more than that is cheeky and probably unnecessary because the cleaners are going to do it again any.

KeepScrapingBy · 09/04/2026 17:50

Is it in France? I did have to clean an entire mobile home once to get my deposit back, seems to be more common there.

penguin816 · 09/04/2026 18:02

No it’s in England. I think it’s cheeky!

Cheeky! I’ve stayed in loads of SC in the UK, I’ve seen ‘leave as you find’ but I just take that to mean tidy, bins emptied, crockery washed and put away kind of thing. Once or twice asked to strip the beds. Anything else is OTT. I have often done a small few things like sweep the floor or similar but by choice not demand.

rookiemere · 09/04/2026 18:42

I would check with Airbnb. If they are expecting a full scale clean, you really should have been notified at the time of booking, not during your stay.

Delatron · 09/04/2026 19:14

It is cheeky. If cleaners are coming in they they will have to vacuum and clean the bathroom and kitchen anyway to a spotless
level.

This really winds me up. It’s not a
holiday if you have to get up and clean the whole place before 10. I would wipe the surfaces down / take bins out and turn the dishwasher on.
