Teenagers and old fashioned phrases

Would the teenagers in your life know what you meant if you asked them
"Are you courting?"

Spent time with extended family over the last week and I asked my 18 year old niece this question.
She looked puzzled and then asked what I meant 😁
Before I answered, we asked her 14 year old sister if she understood the phrase, who said "Yeah of course I know. It means are you going out with anyone!" and looked at her sister in disgust 😂

Any other gems you've come up with, to be met with looks of total bafflement?
(I'm mid 50s by the way, which practically translates to being older than Methuselah!)

I think the Gordon Bennett was a famous horse race, a bit like the Grand National.
It’s referenced in Joyce’s Ulysses.🤓

Galtymore · 13/04/2026 07:55

It was a motor race I think, set up by Gordon Bennett.

Gordon Bennet and other mild expletives like Golly were to avoid taking the Lord's name in vain by saying 'Oh God!'. There are others that begin with a J.. although I can't think of any off hand except Jeez which isn't that different. Bloody is a corruption of By Our Lady which lost its original meaning a long time ago. Flip and Fudge instead of Fuck. Also, the American 'Shoot' instead of Shit. In the UK we just say shit I think.

Does anyone remember alcohol being referred to as ‘grog’?

Vaguley ,was that an australien term?
Australien soaps were huge in the 80,s .

38thparallel · 13/04/2026 09:14

It may have been Australian but I remember hearing it in the 70s.
Edited to add I googled it and it’s an old Naval term which would account for it also being used in Australia.

Not so much old fashioned, but my dd who's been brought up abroad thought that the "lollipop man/lady" helping children cross the road was some kind of unfathomable joke. She was shocked when I told her we really did call them that.

Yes, but not all alcohol. Brandy? Whiskey?

I thought it was American. I never used that expression, it was snogging.

Our swimming pool in Ireland in the eighties had a big sign about behaviour that wasn’t allowed: NO DIVING, NO RUNNING, NO BOMBING, NO PETTING.

Aged eight I was intrigued by the ‘petting’ and what it could possibly mean, given that it was illustrated by male and female silhouettes locked in an embrace…

We had that sign in England too.

I think grog was slightly watered down rum.

SerenitySeeker4 · 13/04/2026 10:57

Yeah, and the ans is "No".

It was more than slightly watered down. Apparently it was three or four parts water to one part rum. Sugar and lime juice could be added too.
