Has anyone felt a house brought bad luck after moving in?

Hello, I’m not usually superstitious but ever since we moved to our current house, we have had several unfortunate incidents and I’m now feeling that this house is somehow bringing bad luck.
Has anyone had similar experiences and if so, how have you turned the luck around if such thing is possible?

If you have the belief that a house is bad luck, then it’s just as believable that a sage cleanse will help. Definitely worth a go!

Scientifically it reduces airborne bacteria and produces ions that neutralise pollutants. It might also help with a mental mind shift to help you enjoy the house more.
Good luck! Flowers

Not really but I’d try sage as pp said. Maybe tell whatever it is to go and leave you in peace.

Have you tried feng shui?

Yes! After we moved into our last house, I felt it was out to get me. It he subsidence, every small job became a massive issue. We couldn’t even find a bath to fit in the bathroom. It felt hostile! Eventually sold it after sorting the subsidence and our new house is much friendlier!

I’m not woo, but after watching Marie Kondo a few years ago I decided to try treating my house like an entity. It’s entirely in my head, but being friendlier and approaching chores as care tasks helped change my attitude and I’ve grown much fonder of the house.

It’s not exactly that I believe the house has its own essence, but it’s a nice practice. At night, I pull the curtains, switch on the lamps and make it all cosy. In the morning I throw open the windows and let the air flow through - they’re just jobs, but when I do those things feeling like I’m in harmony with the house, it’s just a bit nicer.

So that’s the context for me asking what you’re doing to make friends with the new house?

Just don’t watch Psycho and leave the tv on late at night.

My Catholic family used to have new homes blessed by the priest.
Not sure if it's a thing now.

Yep, purchased a number 13, didn't give it any thought at the time, but within weeks my Dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer (no longer with us sadly), my eldest DD developed huge mental health problems, my youngest DD did awful in her GCSE's, roof leaked, boiler broke, garden wall fell down, car got vandalised, car got stolen, then within months my beautiful healthy cat was diagnosed with cancer and died within weeks, relationship of 14 years ended.....

I am not usually superstitious but life sure has improved since getting rid of that godawful house.

Changingplace · 09/04/2026 13:15

Not quite but when I’ve viewed houses I’ve definitely had an off vibe with some places and for no discernible reason knew I wouldn’t want to live there.

Nothing to do with decor, I’ve bought two houses that needed tonnes of work, but some places have a lingering vibe and I couldn’t settle.

PlattyCat · 09/04/2026 13:20

The house across from my parents definitely has something woo going on. The longest residents stayed less than five years. They always move in full of hope and happiness then the house just seems to drains them of all the positives energy. In 35 years living across the street from it there has been three house fires, every couple has broken up and one attempted murder. The residents go from being friendly and the kids out playing to just withdrawing. They never come out or open the curtains. It's as though the house swallows them.

I've looked up newspaper records for the address and discovered two more fires. One where a bedbound woman was set alight and murdered by her husband.

I had a similar run of luck in a house I owned. My life has been great since I moved out. I also learned once the sale completed when I bought it, that the previous owner had bought it with his wife with the intention of renovating it. She developed cancer very shortly after they moved in and the renovations were put on the back burner while she was ill. She died, leaving him with two very young children so he moved back in with his parents. I cried on the day that I had to paint over where they’d measured themselves and the children on the hall wall. They must have been so excited to buy that blasted house.

GameOfJones · 09/04/2026 13:30

I agree with @Changingplace that some houses definitely have a "vibe". I find it really interesting actually, there's a lot of scientific information out there on why this is, usually to do with the architecture of the building, ventilation or infrasound that our bodies are detecting but our ears can't hear. Have a Google of "sick building syndrome" .... I think a lot of this goes some way to explaining why lots of people report paranormal experiences in particular buildings.

If you genuinely feel that the house may be bringing bad luck then I agree with a PP, there's no harm in using sage or trying to make your peace with the building.

I'm not into "woo" at all but I've genuinely thought about doing the same in one particular corner of my dining room where DD said she saw a ghost years ago when she was tiny. I know it's because she put something into my head but it plays on my mind occasionally when I'm turning out the lights at night 🤣. Maybe I'll light a sage candle to make me feel better!

AprilMizzel · 09/04/2026 13:37

We had loads of bad luck when we bought first house and it was a money pit despite survey.

I don't think it caused the bad luck. Pervious owners we first owners so been there decades.

Though don't think area, costs of doing it up, fianacial situation more generally and time in our life helped any or hostile neigbour one side - I don't think it was the actual bricks and mortar place causing the issue.

When we moved though the relief was huge and life been on the whole so much easier.

Skybluepinky · 09/04/2026 13:39

No idea, but their is a house in our road and every couple that has lived there since it was built in the 60’s has ended up divorced.

CanIinterestyouinasarcasticcomment · 09/04/2026 14:43

@DreamyJade Oh how awful, that poor family.

I had forgotten, but the old lady who owned the house before didn't have much luck either, her husband had died in his 50's (medical malpractice), her children had all moved country and she'd been rather lonely and unhappy according to neighbours.

SIL at the time pointed out to me on the day that we got the keys "OMG it's a number 13" seems she was right in her superstitions after all.

LittlestBoho · 09/04/2026 20:12

Yes, I lived in an apartment that felt normal - no bad vibes or anything, but in my one year there I had two serious injuries (not inside the apartment). My flatmate also had a run of bad accidents - i think she was hospitalised three times - and after I left I found out the bad luck continued with the next tenant breaking her leg within weeks of moving in, then getting pneumonia. We were all professional young women, not extreme daredevils; this many accidents in just a 2 year span was not normal.

Some places are just unlucky, it's better to cut your losses if you can and move ASAP.

AgathaHoccleve · 09/04/2026 20:16

No, I don’t. It’s just where you happened to be living when unpleasant things happened.

Oh my that’s terrible. Sorry 😞
good that life improved since moved though!

I don’t think we can move but I will try and turn this bad vibe around somehow. I might try sage thing.

The number 13 in Feng Shui is considered lucky.
