Why does it seem there is not as much fuss made for coverage of the Artemis ii space mission?
Have only just found out it seems to have been a success and so now they are returning
But
Where is the usual wall-to-wall hornblowing coverage one would expect from the US?
It seems everything I could find out came from the UK media
And i could not think why for the life of me
Then I remembered the crew concerned
And it all made sense.......
Reportage in the usual ducky style

It’s been somewhat eclipsed by the world about to go up in flames mainly.

Busybookworm · 08/04/2026 17:03

They’ve been busy trying to blow up the Middle East at the same time…

Viviennemary · 08/04/2026 17:07

It's a bit of a non event imho. They didn't even land. At least they were supposed to have landed and even walked on the moon 50 years ago.

MushMonster · 08/04/2026 17:11

The war, the ultimatum, the price of fuel, the price of everything.... took the shine out of it, sadly.
Also, what do they want to achieve with this? It does not seem to add anything extra to what we already knew?

SomeTameGazelles · 08/04/2026 17:14

Difficult to go ‘Yay America! Leading the way in boldly going etc etc’ when it’s also giving blowing up the planet a good go at the same time.

Somersetbaker · 08/04/2026 17:27

I thought the whole thing was over-hyped, nothing achieved other than the world now knows that NASA can't make a toilet that works.

GreyBeeplus3 · 08/04/2026 19:47

@hobbledyhoy
Yes, I was very aware of that too
Didn't ignore that to favour the other

@SomeTameGazelles
Know its hard to "cheer" for this as the planets being blown apart; but both scenarios caught my eye??

@MushMonster
True, it could've been different but I did admire the 4 astronauts pluck I've to say

@Somersetbaker
Sometimes you've got to go there to learn better for the next time??

They didn’t even land on the moon so what were we supposed to be excited about?

They went around it and took some pictures. Great. Until you remember it will cost $4.2 Billion.

Does that seem worth it?

GreyBeeplus3 · 08/04/2026 20:06

@Busybookworm
Yes I'm not stupid and aware of that too you know.....

You actually inspire me to read about Artemis. Second mission out of, at least, 4 planned. First manned one. Next one is to land and look for frozen water, amongst others. Final mission: creeate a lunar base.
I have not found that much about what this Artemis trip did, bar their orbit is the farthest any human has been from Earth. I suppose they have been mapping the area where they want to land next yeat.
They should have beautiful pictures of Earth.
Astronauts are to be admired. Just the basic training is amazing!

drippingsap · 08/04/2026 20:08

I thought the lack of coverage was a bit odd tbh. Maybe it doesn’t drive much click bait.

SwedishEdith · 08/04/2026 20:11

Netflix livestreamed the key bits.

The timing is so frustrating for them. Showing what America can be brilliant at at the same time the moron is showing precisely what America can be really bad at. Trump probably timed his war so he was the centre of attention instead (obviously, I'm not serious).

Ted27 · 08/04/2026 20:13

Its essentially a test flight for the next one where the plans will be to land.
They aren't just taking pretty pictures.
Photos will be one part of a whole host of data gathering activities, plus scientific activity which will feed into future missions and get people back safely.
Do I think we should be focusing more on evicting Donald Trump - probably. But the feat of getting humans into space is an immense undertaking which shouldn't be dismissed as taking pretty photos.
And if anything could go wrong, far better it was a toilet they could fix rather than something catastrophic

GreyBeeplus3 · 08/04/2026 20:15

@SwedishEdith
Are you sure about that??
He can't have been a fan of the crew that were picked
So felt it was all insignificant

I think space travel is simply an amazing feat of intellectual brilliance, and the pictures are impressive. But I don’t particularly care. I’ve never had a fascination with space.

I do think there’d have been more coverage if Trump hadn’t been stumbling towards WW3 because he has no awareness of global realities.

Somersetbaker · 08/04/2026 20:24

Why are they bothering to send people? Robots must be the answer, either controlled remotely or autonomous, no need for food, no need for air, no need to worry if they can't get back and they won't need a shit while there away.

Riapia · 08/04/2026 20:25

We may need a base on the moon ready for when we’ve totally fucked this place up.

PottingBench · 08/04/2026 20:26

It's not new and to many, many people who are busy getting on with their own lives and worrying about the world around them here it's of absolutely zero interest. Also sentiment towards America could not possibly be at a lower ebb.

Anonanonanonagain · 08/04/2026 21:54

It is widely on all of their socials but I agree their president who they also seem to have no respect for either has 'eclipsed' (ba dum tish) the flight around the moon with his threatening to blow up whole civilisations etc. I think they are doing an incredible job and I would happily take any of the three men home with me to nurture for a bit ;)
