I'm applying for a scholarship for a postgrad and I have 150 words to cringe myself inside out. Can I acknowledge that I'm a slow runner and a knitter of holey washcloths? I have a terrible memory so can I list winning an Easter egg decorating competition in 1992 as a personal achievement? Just how honest (and serious) do I have to be?

Well, if it’s international, the Americans applying will be saying, with not a hint of cringe, that they ran their school newspaper, competed for their undergraduate institution in the 1500 metres, did a marathon to fundraise for cancer research, taught deaf school kids in Nepal with the Peace Corps, and have grade 8 trombone.

"I am a keen cinema goer, love animals and being in nature, and like to keep fit" Sort of thing. You might be a keen cook, crafter or gardener.
That's the first bit. Can't really help with the second, but personal achievements can be anything, not just education or academic. It's really surface, so don't get bogged down in detail or specifics.

They want to know that you're mostly sane, that you're socially capable enough to fit into postgraduate life with your peers and advisors, that you have the ability to stick with something over years, gain a new skill especially if its hard, not quit, that you value learning, and that you have something/someone in your life to protect your mental health with.
Give them the evidence to support all that

Think about it like that and it's less cringy

they want to see student societies or leadership of informal groups. Any achievements outside your regular job could go here.

Are you worthy of a scholarship?
Of course you are.
if you think you are then you’ll find achievements to list

I mean if you’ve never applied yourself outside of the bare minimum then other candidates will outshine you
