Mice in house (not mine!)

After posting yesterday about cats and hunting and rats NDN told me they have mice in their house from outside. They have a bit of a badly designed extension, the garden doors easily let mice in. Then the mice get into house. My NDN before them there had a mouse crawling over her legs when she slept in her DS room on the floor, upstairs.

i’d lend her my cat but that won’t entirely solve the problem. In their garage which had a broken door or something my old white cat used to catch mice there, came back with filthy black feet which is how I worked that out.

what should they do? Poison? Traps? How do you stop them getting inside? they said they were rats but they’re not, just field wood mice!

Ps we’re typical SE London Victorian terraced houses, mines a cottage. And there’s no mice in my house anymore. We mouse proofed it all.

Oh they also have a baby, born last July. So that’s why they’re probably freaking out.

Please don’t trap/poison wood mice.

If they poison the mice and your cat eats one before it dies, your cat could die.

Sadly this happened to my friend’s cat. Vet advised her she saw it fairly often.

I’m against poisoning too.

A welly boot on its side is good for catching them.

I’ve been reading that used cat litter has a smell that keeps rodents away (perhaps you can oblige?)

Yes I could oblige.

How do neighbours stop them getting in though? I had house mice in my house (larger than field ones), no idea where from. Then wood field mice got in. They were living in my bedroom wall and think they travelled from NDN bedroom to mine. I used to hear them. Don’t hear them now and put grilles, foam around anywhere they could get in. Closed cat flaps and scrutinise her when I let her in manually.

should I advise they get a cat? They probably don’t want one with a baby but cats are very effective.

Do they just need to be more vigilant with the doors being open? And fix garage door?
