Theatre goers - do you buy theatre programmes?

I haven’t bought one in years due to them having so many ads, but I’m starting to think they would be nice thing to collect…

What about you?

No, never.

Mumdiva99 · 07/04/2026 17:33

No! Waste of money. Most of the time they have nothing interesting in.

Latenightreader · 07/04/2026 17:36

I used to but they are ridiculously expensive. I wanted to buy one for my daughter when we went at Christmas but it was £10+!

A trip to the theatre is a rare treat but I loved looking through the programme afterwards. I like the Broadway system of giving a basic programme to everyone and you can buy a fancy souvenir version.

ohyesido · 07/04/2026 17:36

No, they usually cost half as much as the ticket and are usually just the cvs of the performers

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 07/04/2026 17:37

No. It's expensive enough.

LightDrizzle · 07/04/2026 17:38

I buy them at the ROH because although they are expensive, they do have excellent content. It’s also a nice souvenir of a big treat as we don’t go often.

I used to love looking at them, but felt they had too many ads, so I stopped buying them.

I had no idea they cost that much, but then again, I haven’t been to the West End in years.

My local theatre hands out free cast lists, but don’t sell programmes at all.

I used to but they’re pretty boring and they are ridiculously priced.

mamansloth · 07/04/2026 17:42

Always. But I work in the industry so like to see who’s doing what!

I was really shocked at the price - I was expecting to pay £5-6! I haven't been a regular theatre goer for some years and I think it shows in my expectations...

Tarkan · 07/04/2026 17:52

I do but they’re usually around £5-10. I like being able to remind myself of the cast in each show. I’ve even bought one from the same show at different venues on a tour to see if there were any changes to it.

Bigger photo books which I’ve bought in the past are more expensive though so I have to really like a show to buy those.

PottingBench · 07/04/2026 17:52

Never. They're too expensive.

Silverbirchleaf · 07/04/2026 17:54

I tend to look at the website afterwards for all the info about cast and creatives.

Gizlotsmum · 07/04/2026 17:54

Always used too, less so now, I will buy the
script from plays but they are smaller and I still don’t really read them they just sit gathering dust

PurpleNightingale · 07/04/2026 17:54

Only when I want to collect a signature from cast members at the stage door.

TofuTuesday · 07/04/2026 18:00

Not any more they just aren’t interesting. People are always selling collections off so I’m not sure they do much except gather dust.

LlynTegid · 07/04/2026 18:02

I don't, have also stopped buying programmes at football, any other event I go to.

Newthreadnewme11 · 07/04/2026 18:05

No because I don’t need any more crap lying around the house!

Miranda65 · 07/04/2026 18:07

Always! I have drawers and folders full, going back years. They're a lovely memento, and one day I'll sit down and read them all again 🙂

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 07/04/2026 18:08

I do, because occasionally one of the actors will go on to become famous, or at least to end up on TV. For local productions in my hometown, I buy one to remind me of the names of any performers I vaguely remember from school.

I do begrudge the cost of them, though.
