Ways to earn from a one-acre property while staying afloat

I'm a bit stuck. I have a large (ish) property but no income. I don't live in the UK. Does anyone have any ideas for earning some money to keep things afloat until my youngest leaves school , in 3 and a half years. We have to stay here until then due to schooling, plus aged parents. I am getting disabilty , my DP is unemployed. I severely stuffed up. I had a rental property but sold it as it had doubled in value. All that money is gone . I'm thinking of growing veg but that isn't going to make much more than the cost of the seeds, same with flowers and their bulbs. I have one acre. There must be something I can do. Any ideas? For reference we are about 10 minutes from the nearest town .

Can't you just downsize?

Not really due to family circumstances on both sides, we need to stay where we are . I mean of course we could but adding in tax and agents fees we would lose a lot of money. We are also happy here except we need to figure out how to earn just a small amount of income. No debt. Basically just need running costs if that makes sense.
Thanks for all replies so far.

Could your husband teach being an electrician to students at college?

PottingBench · 07/04/2026 08:54

Could your husband do handyman jobs?

There are several retired tradespeople near me who cut grass, mend guttering, put flat packs together, paint sheds, fix fences....that sort of thing.

Steady money, huge potential for work from busy professionals and the elderly who will be glad of a careful, precise worker and not expect him to work quickly.

I'm a gardener and the pay for this sort of work is decent. One ad on local social media and some leaflets and you're away.

I am sorry, I cannot think of any way realistically that you could earn anything other than pin money (herbs, house plants, maybe) from such a small area.

Babymamamama · 07/04/2026 09:44

In your shoes I would absolutely downsize/cut losses. Sorry. Really confused why your partner isn’t using his trade in any way. That seems such a waste of a useful skill. Please don’t foster any kids- the money from that shouldn’t be your main/only source of income. What was the plan when you moved to the property/got these animals? Things can change in life and you might find a big weight lifted off you mentally if you could simplify your plans.

Take in students wanting to learn English?

We did this for a few summers to supplement our income.

It's hard work, but it kept us afloat in difficult times.

JulieJo · 07/04/2026 10:16

I don't know how feasible this is or if you need permission. Could you rent a couple of areas as allotment plots? Compare the price of local allotments and get a copy of their rental agreement to copy.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/04/2026 10:21

Where are you OP? France, Italy, Spain ? If it’s one of those 3 you can just say, one of those 3 - Doesn’t sound like Ireland ( pools not exactly much needed there) it does make a difference - I wouldn’t worry about being outed , your circumstances apply to tons of people in those places. Thing is ‘where’ does help because of local rules, demand etc

Nogimachi · 07/04/2026 11:18

I mean, the obvious answer seems to be for one or both of you to get jobs. Life is expensive unfortunately and subsistence farming or income from crocheting isn’t going to cover it. I wondered about chickens or beehives but can’t imagine you can feed a family off these.

Nogimachi · 07/04/2026 11:22

And she does.

ukathleticscoach · 07/04/2026 11:59

Downsize

TheSpottedZebra · 07/04/2026 12:07

What did you blow all your money on? Can you sell any of that? Any other assets?

Are you Brits abroad? If so, could you do English-learning homestay holidays ?

Commonmum · 07/04/2026 14:20

so you own your own property with a pool, you have dogs, cats and A PONY, two adults not working, one in his 50s with a very in demand job, you had another property that you sold and burnt all your money and you are wondering how to get to end of month???!
is this a joke?!
you are actually asking how I maintain my lifestyle, property with pool, all animals, without working and getting an income?
the only answers are win the lottery, only fans Or something illegal but that would mean to do work.
if this is a genuine question, the response it change your lifestyle!
no animals, downsize and get your husband to find any job, even at mc Donald.

Snoken · 07/04/2026 14:26

@Commonmum + 2 sheep! I think one small dog is expensive to keep and I have a good wage, am single and live in an apartment. I can't even imagine trying to survive on one person's disability benefits and paying for 2 adults, 1 teen, 1 horse, 4 large dogs, 2 sheep, cats. I think it's time to cut costs rather than increase income through some side hustle as that's never going to amount to much.

August1980 · 07/04/2026 21:02

Can the land be used as a campsite? What’s the local area like? Check out pitch up. Can you do something like this?

PoppinjayPolly · 07/04/2026 07:49

Fostering for the money is an awful idea. Those kids need people invested in them, not just in it for the money imho.

agree. If you and your home have passed social services checks for fostering, surely you could do child minding or holiday care?

what’s the plan for all the animals when you return to uk in 3.5 years?

Um. I don't know where you got this idea? Not in UK

We have never fostered for the money . 2yo's would turn up in winter with clothes that didn't fit them. We would buy them warm clothes and send them back with the child. Pls don't be rude.

uhohjojo · 08/04/2026 08:16

I'm a detectorist. I'd pay a bit for use of land. If you find your local metal detecting club (they're usually on facebook) there are organised digs that charge people to use land and the organiser might pay you for a days use if it fits their needs. It wouldn't make you much, but they're always looking for land. They usually give half of any big find to the owner, so your best bet is them finding a big pot of gold or a roman treasure!

Choconuttolata · 08/04/2026 08:27

Chickens? Quail? Sell the eggs. Grow salad leaves in polytunnels and sell locally to restaurants/shops. Jams and preserves. My local farm sells their stuff direct from a shed, they have a fridge, freezer, an egg vending machine and contactless payment pad.

Glamping/Yurts?

Fence off an area as a dog exercise field and rent to people for an hour a time.

SpringsOnTheWay · 08/04/2026 09:13

not pretty, but there’s good money in it. Storage units to rent. Involves some investment for sheds or shipping containers.
and your husband can wire them up for electric.

people have too much shit and need somewhere to keep it.

Greenwitchart · 08/04/2026 09:46

If you have a pony, are you an experienced rider/able to look after horses? You could give lessons or offer livery service if you have some stables.

YourWinter · 09/04/2026 00:19

The OP will not indicate which country they are in, only that it is not the UK, and as any money-making venture MAY be subject to local planning consent, licenses or liability insurance, it’s impossible for anyone to guess what may be permissible.

The obvious answer is to focus on getting a job instead of excuses why they can’t.

nocoolnamesleft · 09/04/2026 00:34

None of these ideas will bring in money as reliably as a working adult in even a low skills job. And most of them would be harder work than being in employment.

NarnianQueen · 09/04/2026 12:46

Definitely a dog boarders. I’ve often thought this is far preferable to dog walking as you won’t spend half your time in traffic dropping them off and picking them up

In autumn buy a bunch of pumpkins, dump them in a field and charge people £££ to visit your “pumpkin patch” 🤩
