Do cat deterrent devices affect dogs as well as cats?

Do the cat repellent devices really upset dogs as well ?
I have 2 as new neighbours have 5 cats and they were constantly pooing in our garden. The deterrents plus other measures have stopped this but they are saying their rescue dog is very anxious due to these devices especially at night when foxes etc trigger them as their dog sleeps in the conservatory.

Ive refused to get rid of them as I don’t want a garden full of poo again but neighbours are getting increasingly angry even telling dh they’d come and remove them themselves to which dh said ‘and if you do then you can come back daily to remove your cats shit !’

Do these devices really affect dogs as much as they are making out ?

Given my kids csn hear them, yes I'm pretty sure they would affect dogs too.

Can you use scented products to discourage the cats?

I can't conclusively say that they do, but . . . a couple of years ago, two across-the-street neighbours got sonic anti-cat devices that pointed directly at the front of our house effcectively crossing the 'beams'.

My younger dog absolutely refused to eat in the kitchen. He got very agitated, and kept backing away from his bowl (he's food obsessed and never refuses usually).

When I checked, both had them set to deter not just cats but larger wildlife, including wild boar - I've never seen any around here so it must have worked 😆

I did, however, see the local top cat sitting right in front of one of them, unconcerned.

My dog went back to eating happily in the kitchen when one was turned away from our house and the other broke and wasn't replaced.

ETA
I can't personally hear them, but I can 'feel' them clicking in the back of my neck, and it is really uncomfortable.^^

Which ones do you have? We have a litter box for a garden at the moment and want to do something about it but both sides have multiple dogs and I don't want to stress them out.

I think you have to believe them. Both cats and dogs can hear higher frequencies than humans.

Cats' range tends to go a bit higher than dogs' so it should be possible to buy a device that irritates cats but not dogs. But that is not to say that they all do, or that specifically your one does. I think it's one of those things that can be bought cheaply from China and might not always have much quality control on.

Tries scented things initially and they didn’t work. Tried egg shell and citrus peelings , tried a hose on the grass (apparently cats are meant to be scared of snakes and this tricks them), tried lots of things but all that has worked is the 2 deterrents and making the fence higher with trellis and sharp gravel in flower pots and flower beds. It was huge piles of poo every day as they have 5 cats

Yes and no. So dogs can hear it but if you get a motion sensor one it will only work when someone/something walks in front of it. So depending on the location hopefully only a cat would set it off. A friend of mine got one and it’s worked, the cats know about it now so have stopped coming in the garden full stop which is even better.

BeansOnToast32 · 06/04/2026 17:51

Yes they will definitely be bothering the dog. I can hear and “feel” them if I walk past a house that’s using them and it feels horrible for me.
They must be absolutely horrific for animal ears.

IceStationZebra · 06/04/2026 17:54

There’s one near my mum & dad that affects me (I had no intentions of ever shitting in the garden though). I walk a different way to avoid it, it lasts for about 30 seconds and I hate it. I’m not even young!

Digglesthedog · 06/04/2026 17:56

They definitely affect dogs. I can also hear them and they are so annoying. My neighbour over the back had one and both my dogs acted so weird when they went in the back garden when they first put it out. After a month or so they eventually got rid of it I presume as I can no longer hear it and the dogs aren't bothered in the garden anymore.

LVhandbagsatdawn · 06/04/2026 17:58

There's one at the end of the road and it definitely affects me walking past! It must be awful for children and dogs too.

Please just remove it and use a different deterrent.

PenPaperIdeas · 06/04/2026 17:59

My son can hear them so we switched to the ones that are motion detectors attached to the hose pipe, even if they water doesn't hit them the noise it makes scares them. It worked for a while, I need to put it back as we now have new cats visiting the garden.

Superhansrantowindsor · 06/04/2026 17:59

Your neighbours are very out of order. If my cat went in someone’s garden I’d be apologising profusely and would most definitely clean it up. I’d probably get a catio. Those noise things are horrible though. We used to have a house near us with one and dc could hear it. I don’t know what the solution is. I’d probably lay scoop the mess and put on their doorstep.

RollonSpringplease · 06/04/2026 18:01

I second the one that attaches to the hosepipe. My garden was a cats' toilet. Now it's poo free!
