Could I have a garlic intolerance causing bloating and diarrhoea?

So today I had lamb for lunch. Whilst it was very nice, about an hour later I had awful flatulence and then a bit of diarrhoea. I then felt sick and very burpy - like I had trapped wind and felt better when I do burp.

I then asked AI if garlic was bad for you - and much to my surprise found out that is is and can cause all of the symptoms I have today - and on reflection, really quite often!!

Could I have an intolerance to it??

Yes, you could. That's what I thought I had awhile ago as had similar symptoms to you!

I think the garlic is just doing what garlic does to the gut…
It doesn’t sound like an intolerance.

Yes definitely. I do. And onions too although garlic is even worse. It seemed to come on quite suddenly and I’ve cut out a lot of fodmap heavy foods since and feel much better. I’ve become so sensitive to garlic that even the smell of it on someone else the day after they’ve eaten it makes me feel nauseous. It’s a massive pain for eating out.

I find garlic gives me a bit of an upset stomach as you describe. I remember being surprised when I realised as it wasn't something I'd heard of. It only happens to me with quite a lot of garlic, not just a small amount.

Yes! I have horrendous garlic intolerance! Even a tiny bit floors me for days with gastro and chronic fatigue. I hate it!

Hey, garlic intolerance can cause IBS-like symptoms. Unlike an allergy, which is immune mediated (and you get things like, say, swollen lips), an intolerance is when your stomach can’t process something in it “correctly.” With garlic, they think it’s the fructans. Look up “garlic intolerance fructans” and see if you’re also intolerant to any other high-fructan foods. Keep a food and symptom diary for two weeks and look back to determine.

My BIL - a keen cook - has had to stop eating garlic as it upsets his stomach too much.
