Yes, I just found out these things and must wait until wed to speak to my surgery :(.

Today I took him for men b vaccination and they incidentally found out that his heart rate was just 44, then I see his smart watch readings over the month which ahows avg of 70 but there was a night that sleep heart rate dropped to 32... I will need to ask the GP for ecg/echo.

Also, I noticed that he looked much thinner when he came home from uni ( he is in his first year) this term and he lost 6kgs in last 3 months without trying. My dad had bad diabetes and my husband has a bad autoimuune disease ( psoriotic arthritis).

I know my easter weekend and monday are going to be stressful and I feel alone as husband is on a bussiness trip and has busy shedule.

Any words/ medical experience for me?. I am very worried

does he feel faint or lightheaded?

Yennefer17 · 04/04/2026 18:55

What's "bad diabetes"? Are you worried your son might be T1D? If so, get a glucometer and check his blood sugar.

Littletreefrog · 04/04/2026 19:00

Is he very sporty? Exercise induced bradycardia can cause very low resting heart rate and if he is continuing hight activity levels whilst maybe not eating right due to being at Uni that could lead to weight loss as well. Disclaimer: not a Doctor

I know you are worried about your son's heart rate, and the fact that other issues might also be present, but my HR overnight often goes to 30, and rarely rises above 70 during the day, unless I'm doing something strenuous. Had everything checked, and cardio docs not worried. I may however need a pacemaker at some point if day rates dip. I'm old though! So don't panic.... easy for me to say.

If you feel like it, have a look at Sanjay Gupta's York Cardiology channel on YouTube, he explains things really well.

I’m 54 and my resting heart rate last night whilst reading my book was 39, it never goes much above 54 and has been like this for years.

I shouldn’t instantly jump to something being wrong, he might just be very fit.

Newmeagain · 04/04/2026 19:25

Keep an eye on him. If he is feeling unwell I would take him to A&E just in case.

Bimblesalong · 04/04/2026 19:29

Losing weight rapidly is one of the signs of t1 diabetes - is that what you meant by “bad diabetes”?. How is he in himself? Tired, thirsty?

biwr · 04/04/2026 19:32

is he drinking lots more and weeing lots? Get his blood sugars checked. Possible Type 1 diabetes is a medical emergency so A&E would be appropriate

Miramax · 04/04/2026 21:58

Thankyou for all the answers: some more info,
he is not sporty, he does some climbing and some caving but thats just once or twice a month
also he consistantly lost 2.2kgs each month since jan end, so lost 5.5kgs in 2 months. Almost 9% of his body weight in 2 months :(.
Other symptoms he has is fatigue but not always. So basically

rapid weight loss
fatigue
low heart rate

i really want to try a and e but right now he is ok. I am more worried about fast unplanned weight loss than other two

Anorexia brings a low heart rate (bradycardia) and fatigue. Does he eat (without puking it up afterwards)? There are other causes of malnutrition, but this is more common in students.

asparagusffern · 04/04/2026 22:09

Anorexia is my first thought. How is his mood?

Miramax · 04/04/2026 22:31

His mood is teen mood but not unbearable or concerning than usual
Also, he seems to eat ok but I suspect he is missing a meal, mostly breakfast in his college. But I am not sure that will make him
lose 2.5kgs every month.

update: called 111 they said I need to wait for the gp to open on tuesday

Hmm. Has he been suffering from diarrhoea, smelly poos & farts, stomach pains, vomiting? Hard to ask a teenage boy about this, I know!

If it's mainly weight loss & bradycardia, I'd still suspect anorexia before other things - easier to rectify at this early stage, as well.

Coeliac disease - Symptoms

Find out about the symptoms of coeliac disease. Diarrhoea is a common symptom, caused by the small bowel (intestines) not being able to absorb nutrients.

asparagusffern · 04/04/2026 23:05

My dd had anorexia, it really crept up on us, missing the odd meal could easily be the start. Is he eating 3 proper meals a day? If not, why not? Could be finances, doesn't have the cooking skills, can't be bothered to cook/eating junk food is easier, etc

What does he think the cause might be?

Miramax · 05/04/2026 08:24

He seems to be definetly missing a meal, he was ok the first term, I think he is not bothering to cook much this term, I suspect this because even at home in these term holidays, I call him many times to have food.
He was usually ok with eating, used to come down and check for food.
I am stressing out thinking the worst possible as everything on internet says 6kg reduction in 2.5months is extremely serious 😢

No none of them except some rare farts.
