Have you used nippon ant killer powder? Could you reassure me with your success stories?

We've got an ant infestation. We've had occassional ants over the years, then last years we had what I would now call a small problem. It was managed easily with those nippon ant bait trays. This is sudden and soooooo much worse. I've currently got 8 bait trays around the house as they seem to be moving on from the original sites to other parts of the house, DH has gone out for more bait trays. So to my question. I have the nippon ant killer powder, but I'm scared to use it. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has used it to let me know they're (the humans) are still alive and well?

I think you can only use it outdoors? Not sure.
I have to say the only way we sorted it was to block up the entry point of their nest. We found if you killed the ants wondering around the house, it’s short term gain only. In the long term they come back. You need to find the nest.

I’ve used the powder under paving slabs with success, but in the house I’ve used the liquid. Just poured some in a little bit of foil and watched hundreds of ants trail up to it, take some, and take it back to their colony. I know it’s supposed to be liquid in the bait stations, but maybe there isn’t enough in them if yours keep coming back?

Never worked for me, the only thing is a company coming out and using the proper chemicals. I tried absolutely everything you can buy, but had to bite the bullet and pay the proper people. After one horrendous ‘flying ant day’ when a huge swarm seemed to appear from every crack and under the floorboards, I get the company back every year to spray as soon as it starts to get warmer - I still have nightmares about that horrible swarm!

BIWI · 04/04/2026 15:37

I don't know about the powder, but I do know that ants hate lemon juice (and it kills them). It kills the scent trail as well.

Pollpoll · 04/04/2026 15:43

I don't think you can use the powder indoors. I've never had success with those trays. I used a spray. Deathlac or similar

pinkpony88 · 04/04/2026 15:46

I’ve never had them in the house but we had a problem on the patio a couple of years ago. Nothing seemed to work until I used a kettle of boiling water where they were coming from. I did that every day for a week and they are gone now.

VladsPants · 04/04/2026 17:07

Nippon didn’t work for us at all.

Tried these and the ants marched in and eventually they virtually died off.

We also used Dethlac spray around all the thresholds of the house and kettles of boiling water where we could see lots of ants coming from.

I don’t think they’ll ever be eradicated but this keeps them under control <touch wood>.

My mates mum said to put a pile of sugar outside, it stops them coming in the house as they’ve got food outside.
Give it a go OP, it’s always worked for me, I’ve not had an infestation though.

dudsville · 04/04/2026 17:16

Ok thanks everyone, I'll check those amazon links. We cannot find a nest outside, so e think it's in the kitchen, maybe in the walls. We joke that our neighborhood is on a giant ant nest. Thankfully I don't have any fear of them owing to many experiences as a child, two of those occasions where when I woke to them having swarmed my bedroom. @nogainjustpain i am worried about flying ant day too, sorry to hear it's a real possibility! I'll use the powder on the front lawn as we know they're there, but it's the opposite side of the house to the kitchen. Today I've seen several upstairs and in other rooms downstairs, so that's depressing. We will get a company out if need be.

I have had indoor infestations before and they can be difficult to eradicate. Also a nightmare if you go away for a few days and come home to them.
Outdoors I leave alone unless they are obviously nesting in a house wall. Boiling water works but only for the visible ants, you really want them to take the poison back to the nest.

Twasasurprise · 04/04/2026 17:24

I've used it indoors successfully and I believe iit's for indoor use too. My family including 3 young children survived it.

Our ants were in the walls, coming out under the skirting boards and under the floors. Flying ant day they were coming out of a plug socket too 🤮.

The bait stations didn't work, but the powder took care of them quite swiftly. Glad we moved out of that house!

Ffs, another flying ant day nightmare, argh! Thanks for sharing your experience of using the powder, mine says it can be used indoors and out. How did you apply it, did you sprinkle along edges of rooms?

And our bait stations are working, I think. We put them down Monday night and they are fewer and increasingly ill looking, but we're still also getting some fresher looking scouts.

Yes, just sprinkled along the skirting boards where I knew the ants emerged from.

kohlrabislaw · 04/04/2026 18:57

Have you tried ant stop bait stations? Worked for us. You have to give it a couple of days but eventually they diverted through the stations and it did the job.

BeeMyBaby · 04/04/2026 19:20

I would try a gel with fipronil, they are often sold for cockroaches but work great with ants too. My exh seemily built my old house on top of sooo many ant nests in north africa, the stuff i got from amazon with that ingrediant cleared them all up within a few days. Its like the ant bait stations but way cheaper as its just the gel you put inch lines

Thanks, yes, we put the ant bait things down Monday night. They are working, but it was just so many more than we've ever had in the past and then today we started seeing them in other parts of the house. We started with 4 bait stations, then I bought another 6, and tonight we've put another 6 down.

Seems like you also lived on a giant ant hill! I will look for this thank you.

WonderingWanda · 04/04/2026 22:10

We lived on a massive ant hill in our old house. We generally only saw them on flying ant day but then one year it went mad and they were everywhere. We pulled off baseboard and skirting Iand found where they were coming up. Cleared all the mud and filled the hole with diatomaceous earth (amazing stuff and safer to put this round your house) and then sprinkled that around the edges inside and out. Never saw another ant in the house again but a huge ant hill appeared in the lawn about 5 m away. Their colony must've been enormous but we managed to convince them the exit inside our house was the wrong one.

dudsville · 06/04/2026 11:26

Re the nippon bait trays, if anyone is interested, the pre-loaded ones seem a lot more popular than the ones you load yourself. Anyway, they are clearing. The directions do say to give it 7 to 10 days and it's only been 7. I think when I first posted I was just feeling a little disparing about it not being quicker. But I'm grateful for all your advice, thank you!

I’ve used the nippon sticky stuff in a tube. I put it in corners indoors. It worked very well
