How long do painful external haemorrhoids usually take to improve?

I need some help with an ongoing problem.
i started getting pain around my anus about 2 weeks ago. I looked and it looked like an external hemorrhoid. I’ve been using germoloids cream for about 10 days before switching to scherpoct or whatever it is called for a couple of days which didn’t help the pain. It shrinks sometimes to look like a ball of chewing gum (nice) but it’s always painful really. I just feel like it’s never going to get better. Has anyone had similar and knows what sort of time frame I’m looking at.

I would consider the GP or speak to a pharmacist at this point.
You may have some internally too so will need cream for those. Germoloids can be used internally and externally but I think the genral
rule is to get medical advice if not better in a week.
FWIW I’ve had them twice and both times were agony for 5 days then took another 5 to be gone.

Also, you should adjust your diet where possible. Increase fibre and make sure you’re not dehydrated at all.

I find there’s always usually low level tenderness when they’re grape-sized, but sometimes they flare up and swell massively like a golf ball and it’s horrendously painful. They usually take a few days to swell up and then go back down.

I am reluctant to see the GP as I have seen them recently a lot because of other medical issues and feel like I’m “one of those people” who always sees the GP but on the other hand I just seem to keep getting those bothersome problems that won’t go away by themselves.
I did start getting some relieve around day 10
and then went to the toilet which seems to reignite it. The pain is like a stabbing pain and a heaviness in that area.
Thank you for your help.

Have you tried a suppository? I think you need to see a doctor tbh.

I was embarrassed and I suffered with daily bad bleeding for well over a year - please don’t be me. With daily fibre, more water, a decent cream it was better in 48 hours. So please make an appointment xx

Yes, I’d agree with @Tomselleckhaskindeyes, you need to see the GP. In the meantime try not to get constipated. Take some stool softeners. Try and stay off your feet as much as possible. (Standing up for long periods and/or wearing high heels always brought mine on).

Did you not poo for 10 days? Are you constipated? You should really up your fibre and hydration levels. The goal is to not strain at all because that is what causes/worsens haemorrhoids.

You should book the GP appt and get seen too.

StrawberryRuby89 · 04/04/2026 12:17

I haven’t had any bleeding. I will book in to see the doctor after the bank holiday weekend.
I haven’t tried a suppository as I wasn’t sure if it would work for an external one.

Sorry yes I did go to the toilet everyday. It just seemed to aggravate it on day 10 more than usual.

Suppositories as well as cream - make sure you have the triple action stuff.
Painkillers every 4 hours and if necessary double up ibuprofen and paracetamol.
Stand / walk as much as possible.
Cool bath with bicarbonate of soda.

The only way I got relief when I had them recently was to press on them firmly

EnterFunnyNameHere · 04/04/2026 14:06

I think PP are right that a suppository would be a good idea, but keep going with the cream as well. It might be connected to an internal pile which is stopping it resolving properly whilst that is untreated for example. They are bloody horrible things though, and can seem to come on with very little provocation once you've had them before, so definitely worth getting medical advice. Please don't feel like you're less deserving of the GPs time just because you've needed to go more frequently for other stuff, that's what they are there for after all!
