Did you have a birthday cake every year as a child? How old are you now? Was it homemade or bought?

I was reading the thread about Dermot not eating the caterpillar cake and it’s got me thinking. I don’t like chocolate roll type cakes and never have. They taste like chemicals and disappointment. However, I think I might be holding a grudge against them because I never had one as a child. I can remember 2 birthday cakes in my lifetime and I’m 49. One my mum had someone make for my birthday when I appear to have had a party at around age 4 or 5. It was a chocolate cake basket filled with Dolly mixtures. The second one was for my 21st birthday and made by the local cake shop. I think my grandparents might have paid for it.

I didn’t have parties as a child. I can remember only one where I hid from my friends at first. I was diagnosed autistic last year which explains that one. My parents struggled financially but I just don’t think we were a party family. Perhaps that’s why there was a lack of birthday cakes even though my mum baked cakes for cake sales and her cakes were always lovely.

My own children have had a homemade cake every year. Decorated in the theme of whatever they are most into at the time. Some rather ambitious like a three-tiered Disney Fairies cake for DD’s birthday. For her first birthday she had one made by the same shop that made my 21st cake and it was dry and didn’t go very far whilst costing a fortune so I vowed to always make one each year.

Did you have a birthday cake every year? Do you remember them? Were they homemade? Do you dc have a birthday cake each year?

I think I might be hungry and a bit obsessed with cake this morning! I’m making a chocolate fudge cake later for Easter and having given up chocolate for lent I’m quite looking forward to a slice tomorrow.

I don’t feel deprived by the way, because I didn’t have birthday cakes as a child. Our family just didn’t really do them. My sister had a fancy one for her 21st made by my lovely Nana who was an amazing baker. Lots of royal icing which was the only bit I’d eat because it was fruit cake. That was back in the 80s.

Have things changed now and children have more birthday parties so therefore more cakes?

So many cake questions but the final one: what was your favourite birthday cake?

Thank you for indulging my Saturday morning cake musings.

Had birthday cakes each year, a mix of homemade box mix and bought cakes. Didn't like birthday parties (of my own) as a child so had a party at 3 and 9. My parents would have had more for me if I'd wanted them but even today they're very much not for me.

I’m 29 now, always has a birthday cake, was always brought. I’m fairly sure it’s always been a caterpillar cake bar maybe 1 or 2 years 🤣

Always home-made cakes for birthdays. My mum did a lot of baking. Cakes all through the week in fact - one slice included with the packed lunch for school. Coffee, orange or chocolate usually. Birthday cakes were the same chocolate ones, but with icing and candles on top. I don't think there were any cakes to be found in the shops back then anyway. It was really long time ago...

Growing up we always had a home made cake. Sandwich cake with jam in the middle the same decorations came out every year.
Always made or bought one for my daughter.

Yes, every single year - mostly brilliant homemade ones. And a party every year too. I'm 35 this year. We only have one daughter and she is turning 6 soon. She's having cake and parties every year for as long as we can do that!

I genuinely cannot remember,am now a few decades old! My birthday was always when we were on holiday and I vaguely remember the manager of the hotel presenting me with a cake on my 10th birthday.
My children always had a birthday cake baked by me or our local cake lady .
I bake a very decent Gluten Free cake for my granddaughters birthdays now,she is coeliac unfortunately but this sponge is bloody marvellous!

I was one of 5 children. I'm 65. We never had cakes or parties and one time I never received any presents. Recently, my sister said the same happened to her. I remember thinking I must have done something really bad although I'd no idea what this was. I was terrified of saying anything in case the terrible thing I'd done blew up!

My brother and I never had birthday cakes, nor parties. I'm in my 60s now and it still makes me sad.
For my son I made a cake every year and threw a party for friends and family. When I had my daughter this was not always possible due to my health but always a cake and an outing with her friends. Lighting the candles, singing Happy Birthday and seeing their faces light up brought me so much joy. And this continues with my grandchildren. I love birthdays 🎂!!

I am mid-30s and my dad loves cooking and baking so every year my siblings and I would have a delicious homemade cake (often a multi layer chocolate fudge type cake) and he'd make brownies or cupcakes for the entire class to take to school (my friends still talk about his brownies).

My aunt who is the family baker has made me a birthday cake every year since I was 3. She made DH a cake since we have been together, our wedding cake and the kids cakes for all birthdays. I love her dearly and she expresses her love for us all with food and cake.
