Is a week enough for York, Whitby, Scarborough and the Yorkshire Dales? Ideas welcome!

I have 10 days off in September and have always wanted to visit York, Whitby, Scarborough areas and also to Yorkshire dales.
We’d be driving up from Wales, happy to use about a week of the 10 day break, is that enough to fully cover the area? How many days would you recommend in each place? What order should we do them in? Any ‘must see’ places?

Tips and itineraries much appreciated please! Never been up that way so have no idea!!

We spent a week in Pickering which is a lovely town. From there we did day trips to York, Whitby and Scarborough (went surfing) and also Robin Hood's Bay. Did a walk around Goathland where they filmed Heartbeat. Flamingoland was also popular!
I love Yorkshire

Ooh lovely, I’ll have a look at that. Would like a night or two in York but not the full week.

You could do a whistle-stop highlights tour in a week, but it really depends what you like doing. Wildlife watching? Hiking? Tea shops? Historic sites? Mooching in the shops?

Yorkshire is bigger (and better) than you think.

You will have to be selective but you can do a lot in a week.

Similar to Wales... even the A roads arent the fastest moving. So it can take a relatively long time to go a short distance.

Id recommend Wensleydale (especially if you like cheese) and Richmond for the dales.

York parking isn’t great so you might want to stay just outside and take the excellent park and ride buses into the centre. There’s loads to do, depending on your preferences.

Good advice, especially about the cheese.

But I’d also recommend Skipton and Bolton Abbey, Malham (not at a weekend) and Ilkley Moor.

I would say focus on the Yorkshire dales or North Yorkshire moors national park. Otherwise you may be left feeling unsatisfied that you have barely scratched the surface.

I love both areas, my heart lies in Whitby and the surrounding area though. The walking is incredible and so much to do in the evening in Whitby. Really depends what you are going for I guess.

I think staying in Pickering for 5 nights to explore from there then maybe a night in Whitby and then a night in York on the way home may be a good plan.

You will easily fill a week! Yorkshire is a huge county and the Dales and the Moors near the coast are a long way apart.
I'd focus on the coast as there's Whitby which is fascinating, Scarborough (classic seaside town, some good shows at the theatre, Anne Brontë's grave if you're interested in the literary and I've got a soft spot for the battleship skirmishes on the lake in Peasholm Park if they still do them!), Staithes, Sandsend and Robin Hoods Bay. There are so many beautiful walks around there.
It's easy to get to York for a day, or do 5 nights based in Whitby and two in York. The museums in York are great.

I would suggest the coast so Scarborough, Robin hoods bay, Whitby, Runswick bay or Staithes rather than Pickering but I love being by the sea.

Have a good look at the coastal towns, they really are beautiful. Good access to the inland moor area from Whitby too.

The Yorkshire dales are a hike from the places mentioned above. And you can an easily spend a week there, especially if you are a walker.

You could do north from wales M6 and the cut east either at tebay or Penrith, into the Dales. And then a1 south and turn of for Thirsk and ultimately North York Moors and the coast.

You'd be doing a lot of driving though, and the roads aren't great (even the A1)

Based in Pickering gives you ample scope to travel to the coast, into York, or on to the moors.

Unless you have loads of time putting in the driving to travel to the Dales seems like a trip for next tim. The Dales and the Moors seem really close together on a map, but they aren't really. Esp as there's loads to do based in Pickering.

For me the Dales are a bit samey. (Sacrilege I know!)
