Does anyone get ocular migraines?

luluxxx · 03/04/2026 17:38

So today I was in town absolutely fine
All of a sudden my vision went blurry and like bits of my vision missing.
Then I started seeing flashing lights in my eyes.
lasted 20 mins and went away then came back and lasted 10 mins.

Panicked a bit and went to the a&e eye hospital.
They checked blood pressure /eye pressure
eyes etc
Said everything looked fine and was ocular migarine.
she couldn’t tell me what caused them.
It was pretty scary
I feel a bit meh now and a bit headachy but my vision is fine.

It’s reassuring there’s so many of us
The doctor at the eye infirmary didn’t seem concerned it all
I I guess that should re assure me slighly
I I felt freezing cold last night
i wonder if the really bright light triggered mine in town
i have been walking around the house with my shades on
Partner has been calling me Stevie wonder 🙈

I get them now and then - I don’t know what kicks them off. Had the first when first newly pregnant. If possible I lie down with my eyes closed for 10 or 15 minutes - they soon pass.

I had a retinal migraine for the first time last week. It's where the disturbed vision affects only 1 eye. I spoke to the GP, who said it's probably hormonal given that I'm peri-menopausal.

yes first a missing bit in my line of field then zigzags, somteimes black and white, sometimes coloured. Last one I was alone in a shopping centre, managed to get myself to a Specsavers for. bit of help. Never get a headache with them. I am sure the last one happened after I'd been in a shop that had very bight spotlights and one shone in my eye.

Flamerouge · 04/04/2026 09:53

Yes, I have these. Like a lot of other posters mine start with my peripheral vision blurring. Lasts 20-30 minutes. I find if I take paracetamol as soon as I notice it that helps it clear. Then lying down until it passes. I think mine are triggered by stress/screens. I've never had one progress to a traditional migraine, for which I am very thankful! After it's over I usually feel tired and slightly hungover. Getting your blood pressure checked and seeing an opthalmologist is a good idea.

Scarlettpixie · 04/04/2026 10:23

I get these a few times a year. I had my first in my early thirties when I was pregnant and it was very scary. I get a loss of focus and periferal vision and the the flashing/zig zag lines. Usually lasts about 20 mins. I try to take some paracetamol and ibuprofen straight away and get off screens and this usually staves off the worst of the headache. I usually feel tired and washed out after and a bit sick. Often I get a mild headache (sometimes none) but only rarely a bad one where I need to lie down.

Anxietyspiral · 04/04/2026 10:31

I've had 2 in my lifetime. The first one started with the kaleidoscope patterns and scared the life out of me until I googled it. The seconding started with blind spots and I looked in the mirror to check my hair and I only had one eye! I actually screamed as it frightened me so much. Spent the next 10 minutes convinced I was going crazy and had started hallucinating. Then the kaleidoscope patterns began and it was such a relief!

frugalkitty · 04/04/2026 10:34

I had them in my teens and early twenties but they came on with Deja-vu which was awful. I'd be doing something and then come over warm and realise that I'd lived this already and I knew exactly what people with me were going to say before they said it. Then I'd have white flashing zigzags. I just had to wait for it to be over before getting on as normal. Used to say I was having a turn! Only read about ocular migraines in recent years and realised that's what it was.

LovelyDayLovelyDay · 04/04/2026 10:43

Yes I get them, just had one now in fact and had to stop reading my book. They last half an hour and the weird patterns are in both eyes.

Once I had three in one day and I was driving at the time and had to pull over for half an hour each time. I definitely think stress plays a part as that particular day I had a car full of kids messing around!

OttersOnAPlane · 04/04/2026 10:44

I get them quite frequently, usually in a morning, and it's weird jagged shapes obstructing my vision.

I sit down and wait for them to go away, and fortunately don't suffer any pain or nausea. Optometrist doesn't seem remotely concerned.

CherryRipe1 · 04/04/2026 10:46

Yes! Looks like the pixelation in Predator. Swirly vision, zig zags like lit up sharks teeth, Greek looking hieroglyphics for 30 mins then afterwards I am hyperactive. Chocolate, walnuts, certain food colourings and mouldy cheese like Stilton trigger mine so I avoid. My first one was aged 14 at school and I thought I was having a brain haemmorrage or stroke.

manaliiiive · 04/04/2026 11:00

Yes, worked out it was if i did exercise then rushed around getting ready after (like went for a run then straight in the shower then rushed out to work) . I make sure I sit a while after exercise now before showering

TonyDancer · 04/04/2026 11:11

I’ve had two. Passed after about 30 minutes. I put it down to stress

ViolaPlains · 04/04/2026 11:17

I’ve had these about once/twice a year for the last couple of years. I did think it was because of very bright sunlight but the last time I had it was in a restaurant in the evening. After reading some comments here I’m now wondering if it is perimenopause related.

PinkArt · 04/04/2026 12:37

I got them for a few years on my early 40s, while in perimenopause. Touch wood, since hitting menopause they seem to have stopped. The only real trigger I was aware of was being a bit dehydrated. I could also reduce the intensity of them if I chugged back a bottle of water when the first zig zag appeared.
They're fucking terrifying when they first happen and you don't know what going on. And while it's great to not get the crippling headaches, that what made me less certain it was 'just' a migraine and not something like a stoke.

Mamabear487 · 04/04/2026 12:40

I’ve always had migraines but since I was pregnant with my now 4 year old I started getting ocular migraines when I was 7 months pregnant and scared the life out of me! I actually work for a retinal company so they did all the relevant eye tests and checks and confirmed what the doctors said. I usually get them when I’m dehydrated and stressed a couple times a year

FalseSpring · 04/04/2026 17:43

I've suffered with them since I was a teenager. Sometimes just the ocular disturbances but more usually followed by the migraine headache. I definitely have food allergies including chocolate which is very unfortunate at Easter!

TimSamandLulu · 04/04/2026 17:48

I had one once after a stressful day - scintillating scotoma that started small and dispersed across my entire field of vision but no headache. That was over 8 years ago and I haven’t had another one.

SardinesOnButteredToast · 04/04/2026 18:01

Yes, a right pain in the butt. I get flashing red or orange light even with eyes shut, and on fewer occasions, a patch of poorly defined darkness with reduced vision. Migraleve thankfully gives me a lot of relief.

myheadsjustmush · 05/04/2026 15:02

Yes, I have suffered from these for years.

Anything can trigger mine; sunlight glare, stress, caffeine or tiredness.

I get zig zags in both eyes. It starts as a dot and then fans out until it disappears after about 20 minutes. I don't always get a headache afterwards, but if do, a really bad one can floor me for a couple of days. 🙁

TorroFerney · 05/04/2026 15:24

My husband gets them when he’s tired. Has always had then but he’s never gone to the doctors it was only when someone said they got them and called them an ocular migraine he said oh I get that.

BooseysMom · 05/04/2026 16:17

Mydogisagentleman · 04/04/2026 06:18

I haven't had one for a year or so.
Opthalmology doctor told me that it's bits of my retina flaking off.
He said that I should only be concerned if something like a blind covered my vision as that indicates a detached retina

That's what they told me the first time it happened. It sounds horrendous when they say it's bits of my retina coming away! I've only had 3 or 4 since my early 40s. I'm 54 now and had one about 2 months ago. It happened when I was at work so put it down to screens. It lasts about half an hour and is like a zigzag of bright light in the top right of my vision in one eye. It slowly moves out of my vision like it disappears into my head or something. It's a weird feeling and I feel a bit nauseous and get a mild headache with it. But I can get back to normal fairly quickly once the zigzag fades away.
