We all know MN hates the word moist, but are there any others that you really dislike?

I don't like smear or seep.

Meant to add I can swear like a trooper but the c word really grates and makes me cringe for some unknown reason
that’s me done for today😊

gift, impact as a verb - it's give and affect

excited for when people mean excited about, or looking forward to

talking to something when they mean talking about - I talk TO a friend and ABOUT the weather. I don't talk to the weather! Well maybe people do actually when they tell the rain to go away :)

likely will instead of probably will or it is likely to

Is it possibly because "excited about" sounds every so slightly keen and wet? Idk, it's a weird and quite subtle one. Like "excited to" "excited for" to me sound like things you could get away with in a particularly lick-arsey covering letter, but being "excited about" something tips over into mild cringe. And don't get me started on "excited by" which sounds faintly sexy.

To me it sounds ugly , if that’s ok ?

Yeah, perfectly ok. I was only asking!

Nuffpillllls · 03/04/2026 17:00

Boundaries! Unless talking about land boundaries.

Imaribenaberry · 03/04/2026 17:02

Saying at the end of a sentence - “and all that jazz”, I’ve got a friend who says it all the time and it makes me cringe.

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/04/2026 17:05

CharlotteSometimeslikesanafternoonnap · 03/04/2026 17:05

"On the boob"
"Change his bum"

Overtheatlantic · 03/04/2026 17:08

“If I’m honest” “To be honest” “Plenty” of anything.

YiayiaP · 03/04/2026 17:08

“Long story short.”

It never is!

"Points to ponder" gives me the rage.

And don't get me started on "reach out" - if you're not in the Four Tops, don't say it!

I came here to say "reached out". What's wrong with 'contacted'?

FeliciaFancybottom · 03/04/2026 17:12

In the trenches makes my teeth itch. Makes my teeth itch, boils my piss. Boils my piss makes me boak. Boak has me fumming. Fumming has me shaking and sobbing. Shaking and sobbing really grinds my gears.

AgentPidge · 03/04/2026 17:12

Not gonna lie, I can't lie, iconic.

ohyesido · 03/04/2026 17:13

Boils my piss is so crude and crass

Torchout · 03/04/2026 17:15

Flavourful, the correct. British term is flavoursome

greenteaandlimes · 03/04/2026 17:15

“It is what it is”
But I use it all the time 😂😫

H202too · 03/04/2026 17:16

Ride or die

Giving as in it is giving bad energy or something else that it reminds them of.

Internationalwomendayheadquarters · 03/04/2026 17:17

Off of

TulipsDaffsAndSunshine · 03/04/2026 17:22

Someone “has form” 🙄🙄🙄

Myself/ yourself instead of using me/you as would be GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT!

Yes the myself and yourself have really started to annoy me too.

HangingOver · 03/04/2026 17:27

I also hate meal! Especially "my meal" or "the meal". Lots of food words actually. "Main" referring to a main course, Ditto "my main" or "the main".

Saying someone "helped themself" also makes me cringe. As does "manage" eg. "I can't manage all that"

"Stuffing" in reference to eating greedily. My Mum used to say to my brother "have you been stuffing?" Meaning had he'd been eating before dinner. Urgh.

In store, on pack and in branch also annoy me.

I have problems.

Mimimayhem18 · 03/04/2026 17:27

‘Not a bad shout’ gives me the rage- please just say that a good idea.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/04/2026 17:42

Several IMO daft things I only ever see on MN:

Not your circus, not your monkeys.

That doesn't work for me.

No is a complete sentence.

Bestie (unless you’re about 7)

muddyford · 03/04/2026 17:43

'Reach out '. Make me want to retch out.

GlosGirl82 · 03/04/2026 18:45

‘100 and 10 per cent’ % means out of 100 - you cannot go above that…
