Short fences in rented house

We live in a rented house. We finally have a lovely garden and DC are enjoying making the most of it. However, for most of the garden the fence is really short and so my son is forever kicking footballs over. We can’t put new fences in. Is there any way I could make these higher or something I could put up so my son can play football in the garden?

You can get temporary ball net stop systems. Not cheap but they do the job.

Yeah a ball stop net. The fence looks 6ft high so other option is to move the net toward the house (depending on age) as you pic looks like it is down the side of the garden. If young then the ball wont do any damage. If older then can work on his aim

I think the tall section is 2m, the lower bit more like 1.2m.

Take him to a park to play football. Fucking hate kids playing football in small enclosed gardens.

Ball stop net worked for us think we got ours from net sports

The garden doesn’t look small. Children should be able to play at home.

There is nothing more bloody annoying than balls coming over the fence and kids wanting them thrown back or coming around to knock. I had this in my first private rental. I ignore the door knocks and threw them back a few days later. It made them a lot more careful.

She didn’t suggest it isn’t annoying and is looking for a way of allowing her son to play without this happening
children should be out playing out without fear of miserable people moaning

Thanks for those of you that were helpful. No I’m not going to stop my DC playing in their garden FFS. I have ordered some of the nets. Hopefully they will stop this.
for those of you making comments on the size of the garden. It is a big garden. You can’t see it all in the photo. Unfortunately the landlord put tiny fences down most of the garden.

OP, you were clearly trying to find a solution for it to work all round, and hopefully neighbours will appreciate it.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 06/04/2026 08:17

@ThirtysomethingMummy Lower fencing is cheaper and normal down the length of a long garden. Often the high fencing is for privacy near the house. The LL won’t have put up fencing knowing the play habits of your dc. However, take steps to prevent the neighbours being annoyed and it’s sorted!

The Venn diagram of people who moan about kids on their mobile phones and people who moan about kids playing a normal kids game outside, is a circle.
