I'm getting increasingly angry and depressed for our children's future.

To think that my hard working son, who gets minimum wage is now strugglying to make end meet because of an egotistical, corrupt, millionaire/billionaire pervert is giving me sleepless nights. To think that the whole world is being held to ransom by men like Trump and Putin is making me so depressed and angry that its affecting my every day life. I feel so utterly helpless. We are all recycling, being told not to use our woodburners etc, while the like of the US and Russia are pumping colossal amount of CO2 into the atmosphere with their bombs. I'm so FUCKING ANGRY.

Sure look op - we all know the world is fucked - between climate change and grim looking uncertain futures!

but I had my kids regardless because I wanted them!!

i just focus on giving them the best childhood possible and do all the fun things and enjoy our life as best we can and don’t worry too much about the future because there’s nothing I can really do.

I am going to go against the grain here, and please don't think that means I am an ardent Trump and Putin supporter.

But your son is not earning minimum wage because of them.

There has to be personal responsibility.

Putin, Trump et al are making it very difficult for anyone on minimum wage to earn enough for a good life.
There are many many people working in essential minimum wage jobs for many reasons. They can't all personal responsibility themselves to a decent lifestyle.

I will be honest I found the post hyperbole.

I can't grasp why somebody living in The UK, would have sleepless nights about Trump and Putin.

Honestly, it's kind of wild how many people blow money on random stuff online and then turn around and complain about their lives. Like, why not use that time to actually look up ways to make things better — for yourself and your children?Especially if you know you can't hand them everything on a silver platter, at least teach them how to figure things out.

I'm in my mid-40s now, but back when I was 18, I was already using the internet to hunt down the best-paying careers that fit what I was good at. I've pretty much been doing that ever since — just constantly trying to level up my life and give my family a better shot.

With my own children, I'm really pushing them to be competitive — to go hard in the areas where AI falls short and get really good at the stuff it just can't do. Honestly, the same mindset applies when you're up against other people too. That's a big reason I'm all in on homeschooling. At home, my children are learning to be fighters, not victims. In schools, children are basically told they can't compete or grow, and they're surrounded by people who've already given up.

I think everyone deserves a decent standard of living if they are doing a decent job. Even if that job is minimum wage.

Your kids may have an edge but they will still be up against hundreds of people for tens of jobs.

What do you think that AI won't be able to do? And do you think there are enough jobs for everyone in those areas?

It must be dreadful if you live in one of the areas in the world currently under attack and I don't underestimate that, or the threat of global conflict.

However, as someone who remembers the 1970s, the way we live now is much more materially comfortable than 50 years ago and if you live in the UK currently, you are better off and living a nicer life than just about any other person ever in history, so I don't think we should despair.

It is not "normal" historically to have educational opportunities, a fulfilling career, a range of job opportunities good health with access to even basic healthcare, or to own your own home which isn't overcrowded. This has always been the preserve of a very few, and in the case of healthcare, even the current offerings of the NHS are a vast improvement on healthcare available even to the rich a hundred years or so ago.

That’s all gone. Poor kids have no access to educational opportunities that will materially improve their lives. We haven’t had that since wages and house prices uncoupled in the first place back in early 00s. As someone who used to work in a median wage professional job and is now doing 13 hr shifts on minimum wage in the NHS I can assure you that that is falling apart.

My daughter is doing her GCSEs in 2 years and is thinking about what she wants to do 16-18, part of me thinks it doesn't matter because you wont be able to get a job anyway but I don't tell her that.
It is depressing but I try not to think about it too much otherwise it will consume me.

And oh god yes this.

JuliettaCaeser · 02/04/2026 15:12

I don’t think capitalism is working out my view is the point of it was to provide an income and ordered society for the majority Unfortunately it seems to have been subverted by robber barons who take it to its extreme by extracting all value for a tiny elite screwing over the majority. I am not a clever economist to work out a solution but we can’t go further down this road.

The other option works a lot worse!

WaryCrow · 02/04/2026 15:21

Prove that? The evidence is that for most people things were better when Britain was more socialist. They could afford to sell their labour for a wage that bought them houses and ensured a reasonable living.

Now the number of jobs has been falling for 20 years. Thats why we have an employers market and have done for all of my working life.

babyproblems · 02/04/2026 15:23

Not just you.
Why is he only earning minimum wage and can he improve this somehow? That’s something he could take control of.

JuliettaCaeser · 02/04/2026 15:27

The billionaire class need to watch out. Didn’t go so well for the ruling elite in France in 1779 did it? When the majority got pushed too far…

Pussert · 02/04/2026 15:35

My 18 yo DD is desperately looking for a job just now with no success. She has applied for at least a hundred and most don’t even bother getting back. Even a very basic entry level job nowadays is looking for experience, it’s ridiculous!
A nearby chippy was advertising for staff and wanted one year of experience. When I was a teen (in the 90s) we could walk into jobs. It all seems so much more difficult now

AprilMizzel · 02/04/2026 15:38

There a youtube shorts guy we watch who does historical skits - he jokes when he gets down he goes at looks at his spice cupboard - as thoughout most of history he'd be rich with all the spices he has just sat there.

Well, I feel the same with my adult grandchildren, but they will do what previous generations did, in much harder times. Find a way. No point in stressing.

That's because the minimum wage rules mean it is hard to justify employing someone with no experience. We need an entry level wage for teens so they are appealing to employers again. In the meantime, I have sorted my son a voluntary job, would that be an option for your daughter?

Well the billionaires are all on their private islands or tucked away in New Zealand or Hawaii so not sure how poor hungry people from other parts of the world will be able to hunt them down like it’s revolutionary France when we get to breaking point.

Yes there is the argument that if AI is doing all the jobs, who has the money to pay for goods and services AI is producing, but I imagine the plan is to extract as much wealth as you can from the system before it collapses and then retreat to your bunker whilst the world burns.

They still need food. Still rely on services . They need societal stability to stay wealthy

I'm not naive. I think we all know the world has changed. But no-one can cocoon themselves entirely from reality

TooBigForMyBoots · 02/04/2026 18:18

I worry about the impact on the next generation too @WhenWillTheShitEnd.

DC1(19) was told today to "extend"🙄 his Easter break due to projects being postponed/cancelled following the Trump announcement last night. While he is glad to have more time at home, his meagre savings are paying rent on a property far away, and flights are becoming more expensive.

He's been applying for jobs/courses in our home city. No joy yet.

Trump is wreaking havoc on the West and our children's future.

CottageHearth · 02/04/2026 19:08

My sons a gardener. Earning a low wage but has just been promoted. He turned down a university place. The thought of debt and then no job anyway put him off. So he's earning and getting experience. No AI will take his job.

dont you just love the rich and overprivileged telling us how to look after our children

DFOD

There really is no need to be rude, I was answering someone else who was interested but if you want to take offense rather than try something different to help your child then do so. Throwing nasty comments at me will not solve the issue you have and it won't help your son. Help your son rather than wallow.

Catullus5 · 02/04/2026 20:06

I have a book called London Labour and the London Poor by Henry Mayhew, published in the 1840s.

Back then just about everyone worked in the gig economy and the only way to be financially secure was to have lots of assets. Dishonesty was normal and there was more sex work/mistress arrangements as people did what they had to get by. Very little regulation regarding working conditions, housing, food, environment etc. Lots of unpleasant parallels to what we seem to be heading towards though there is still some way to go.

I mean no criticism of you at all, but you are fortunate that your children will be taught. Some parents aren't as fortunate and not all children will succeed regardless of their parents' efforts, especially in an increasingly hyper-individualistic, clamorous times.
