My phone IS reading my mind!

I posted about this a few years ago with some examples of what I eventually just thought were coincidence; I would be silently thinking about something and a video or ad for it would come up in my algorithm. Mumsnet told me not to be so silly. My husband just told me that our phones know us better than we know ourselves, and the content it produces is based on what it knows we are interested in.

Well. Tonight, I was (silently) putting something into the bin and had a very quick thought that American people pronounced the word 'been' as 'bin' . Then I started thinking about English actors doing American accents, and how they probably work with dialect coaches who probably tell them to say 'bin' instead of 'been' as part of their coaching.

So then around 2 hours later I was on youtube shorts for some dopamine and up comes a video from a dialect coach. She is explaining to non native English speakers how they can speak with a US accent. She goes over three words and explains how they are pronounced differently. One is what, another of and the final one 'been'.

I instantly remembered my silent thought from before and it just all seemed really weird.

Anyone else have similar stories? It was just so specific!

I’ve had similar experiences in the last few months too. Several wtf? moments…

Random stuff that I’ve thought about (not googled or discussed) turns up in ads or suggested things on FB or Insta.

Its just coincidence. Lets be wildly conservative and say you only have 1 thought a minute.

That's 1440 different thoughts in a day that could vaguely match something you see on your phone later.

10,000 in a week
43,000 in a month
525,960 in a year

Thats half a million chances in a year that something you think about might happen to pop up in your youtube algorithm later on that day.

It's amazing it doesn't happen more often to be honest.

I swear that this proves it! I'm encouraging my parents to declutter at the moment. One of the things I have my eye on is my brother's little red toddler wheelbarrow he had 36 years ago. It's now a peeling rusted mess that's sitting there in their carport. I haven't mentioned it yet, but I was thinking when I did I would suggest we replace it with a lovely new one for his son, who's 4 years old, for when he comes to visit.

What am I getting today but ads for little red painted metal wheelbarrows.

You’re doom scrolling and admit you do it “for dopamine”

You’ll have seen the voice coach before and paused longer on her videos, probably even heard her use the bin thing before too

The people you might know on FB definitely does
i was outside work, someone I have never met stopped his car and asked me for directions. I had FB open and so did he (I could see his phone)
later that day I was at home and open FB, he pops up on people you may know
apparently it’s a Meta thing if you have apps open at the same time

Definitely this!

Also talking with a friend via videocall, she's just started a new hobby Fencing (as in the sport)
I then start getting ads for garden fences 😂

It really doesn't but in fact that is worse. The few times it creates a moment like this are just infinitely more memorable than normal life. Meta knows so much about you and it's all from your usage, the usage of your friends and family that it is way more worrying. If your phone is near another phone _ train, work etc it will link you together. Ive dropped out of Meta products...

Eddielizzard · 02/04/2026 13:54

Your phone, if wifi is enabled, will try to ping off local wifis as you walk. Most shops has wifi, so your phone will try and connect. That is how Meta / Google wtf know about your location even if you've switched location off.

You can check your privacy (on Samsung) on your phone and see which apps are using permissions. I found Google had been using my microphone even though I hadn't been using any google apps. So it had just been listening in for its own nefarious reasons. Maybe it's just advertising, but I still don't like it.

Be careful people. These companies are not your friends. Don't give away your data so willingly.

I went through a stage of this happening all the time and then it stopped a while back.

Please tell me you took a picture of the wheelbarrow? Otherwise, that’s some dark art at work…

Smarvellous · 03/04/2026 07:57

Yes I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't just the microphone they have access to, but the camera as well.

No! No pictures, no Googling kids wheelbarrows, no searching up any outdoor equipment or toys, no mentioning it to anybody... it was literally just a few minutes of thought and BING, advert!
