Giving notice to cleaner

I've done a thorough audit of my finances and I just can't afford a cleaner anymore, I'm in my overdraft at the end of every .onth and it's just not sustainable.

My cleaner is having such a difficult time at the moment, the landlord has given notice on their house and they have three small children and her knee is chronically inflamed, so I feel awful about it. She has just asked for a pay rise as she is struggling.

I would quite like to give her notice, get the keys back and just pay her for the next month without her coming back.

What would you do?

Your plan is sensible. You can’t keep paying someone you can’t afford just because they’re having a tough time too. Is there anyone you can recommend her to, to replace the hours with you? Or even just let her know you will ask around

I had to let my cleaner go for the same reasons.

I gave her a month's notice, told her she could go earlier and still get paid if she preferred and wrote her an excellent reference. She was fine about it.

I paid her throughout Covid too so she knew I only did it because I just couldn't afford it anymore - still felt terrible though

Her financial situation isn’t your problem. You are doing the right thing by taking care of your own finances.

Cleaners are always in demand so if she is any good, she shouldn’t have a problem getting another client. She can advertise on local fb groups.
