Steroid use injection into the spine

So around 18 months ago after years of off/on back pain, my lower disc prolapsed and that disc and one above were dehydrated. It was horrifically painful I spent two weeks in hospital and around 6 months recovering. I have put a lot in place - meds, physio, weight training, swimming, pilates, walking all to build strength.

I am still in pain everyday, some days very low level others more so but I haven’t had any significant pain (like a 8/10 or above ) in about a year, some days are harder and this sets me back in my training. I am still limited in my mobility day to day in terms of how much I can do and lift and needing to rest/ move. I still take nerve pain meds plus o/c pain relief.

about 9 months ago I paid for the steroid injection in the spine, it gave around 10 days relief and then seems to stop working. I also about a month later had increased nerve pain but that could be coincidence. I’ve now reached the top of the NHS wait list for it but I don’t know whether to go for it.

it could improve pain level to non existent, making life easier and increasing my mobility. or it could make it worse (low chance. ) it could do nothing and I’m injected with steroids for no reason.

I don’t know whether to try it (each time can effect differently so it could work better than last time) or not. Where I am now is manageable but is still not easy .

WWYD?

I’d contact the service/Consultant/clinic that would be administering the injection & inform them you’ve already had the injection previously & only received 10 days of analgesic effect, they may decide to change the injection technique or the medication mixture (e.g. using a different steroid or combining it with different nerve blocks) if they know your previous one didn’t work well.

Thanks that’s a good idea, I’m unsure if I will
see the consultant before the procedure if I go ahead but hopefully I will.
