Goodbye - Cosy Winter Nights

Ladymuckypuddle · 29/03/2026 13:39

Will start this by saying that I do like every season and I am grateful for each season I experience. However all that said, I am a little bit sad that the dark nights are over. I like closing the curtains at 4pm, putting on the candles and log fire all cosy with throws and pjs. Anyone else going to miss the Winter months?

I appreciate a cosy night in, but winter feels relentless in this country. It’s still freezing most days and if we can’t have warmth, at least let there be light!

hazelberry · 29/03/2026 16:09

Good bye and good riddance. Who want's to spend their life under a blanket.

Although the weather is shit today so not feeling very Spring like.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 29/03/2026 16:13

Nope, well over it by now. I love Bonfire Night and the run up to Christmas - that's the time for cosy nights and twinkly lights. I am so done with it by February though. I love the optimism of this time of year - fresh growth, flowers and light evenings where you actually feel you have time to do something before it gets dark.

I like the light starting to fade before 6pm, dark by 7pm. The dogs will have been walked in daylight, they and I have eaten our supper and settled on the sofa. Long light evenings mean I’m busy in the garden as long as I can still see, and often come indoors after 9pm having not eaten yet, and too tired to actually sit and unwind.

LadyWiddiothethird · 29/03/2026 16:13

I love Winter evenings,I swim in an outside pool every night whatever the weather, nothing better than a cold frosty night, looking up at them from the water.Pool is not busy, just us regular outdoor swimmers. Then I love coming home to a warm house, sitting in front of the fire.Love the dark.

I am not a Summer person at all,my dislike of it has increased as I have aged!I especially don’t like light mornings.

Bring on Winter.

I have long had blackout curtains/blinds in my house. So its dark when I say its dark! 😂There's no law that says you have to have daylight till 10pm if you don't want to. Options exist.

I actually get really stressed if its too bright. My nightmare house is one with floor to ceiling windows. So many times in summer I will close all the curtains and blinds around 7pm and put lamps on. Makes me feel calm and ready to wind down for bed.

All that said, I have recently got back into cross stitch and embroidery and, despite having glasses, its much easier in daylight. So I will probably keep it light a bit later this year. Will still have an hour of dark before bed though to help me sleep.

Ladymuckypuddle · 29/03/2026 16:24

@ShiftingSand oh yeah, the hot summer restless nights 😪

@LadyWiddiothethird you go outside swimming during the cold months?

You guys are right, the months zip past and winter months will be here soon enough, I guess. I've realised from some pp that, that's what I miss during spring and summer it's the winding down of the day and getting my body ready for bed. I seem to get all out of sync during the lighter nights.

I find the opposite. My body hates dark mornings with a passion. It’s awful for my circadian rhythm and makes me stressed and depressed.

To wake up and get in the garden and get sunlight in my eyes makes a huge difference and it’s healthier for us. We need light.

Dark saps all my energy. Which I guess would be fine, if like some, I liked to lie under a blanket on the sofa for 6 months. But I don’t!

Same here. The clocks going forward is a sort of back to normal for me. BST just works so much better with my natural rhythms somehow. The winter has been very long, grey and bleak and I can't wait for some proper warmth, light and vitamin D now.

EasterDecoration · 29/03/2026 16:42

Nope, I'd be happy with 18 hours of daylight all year round. No fairy lights, candles etc here, they just make it even more claustrophobic.

Yep - we all need vitamin D and sunlight for health. It’s very unnatural to want to stay inside in the dark in the daytime (which is what 4pm is!).

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 29/03/2026 13:41

Nope. Not at all. Its only cosy when you dont need to go out in it. Many of us have been battling relentless rain on our way back from work at 4pm having seen no daylight all day. Depressing as hell

What Sandra said.

voidcatsarethebest · 29/03/2026 16:48

I don’t enjoy hot sweaty nights but I cannot wait for more daylight
i work underground with no windows and getting to work in the dark and coming out of work in the dark is depressing especially with the stupid months of rain we’ve had! I just want to not feel damp

Empress13 · 29/03/2026 16:49

I cannot wait to have a well deserved glass of vino in the garden after work bring on summer !

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 29/03/2026 17:00

I am going to scrub down my patio next week, ready to sit out on it with my coffee in the mornings. Can't wait!

hazelberry · 29/03/2026 17:00

It's so nice to still have hours of daylight after I get home from work.

Gamerlady · 29/03/2026 17:43

I hate the dark winter nights, nothing cosy about them. Everything is dark and dull. Most things dead. Look forward to warmer longer nights and all the nature coming to life . Makes me happy and energised.

I agree. I mostly WFH and if I haven't managed to get out at lunchtime, in winter it's dark by the time I've finished work. I loathe going out for a fresh-air walk in the dark.

stickygotstuck · 29/03/2026 17:56

Good riddance!!
