I hate not having a gas fire

I’ve moved from a house with a gas fire into one with a multi fuel stove and I hate the damn thing.

I’m sitting here feeling cold and just need a blast of a fire to warm up. But no, I have to sit under a blanket and have cold hands and a cold face and not want to get up, crank up the central heating, or set a fire and wait an hour before there’s any heat and then leave the bastard thing chucking out heat when I go to bed.

Yes, I know plenty of people can’t afford any heating, but 😖

What are you burning? Wood on a stove heats up really fast.

MagpiePi · 27/03/2026 20:11

I’ve only got coal because burning wood is so bad for the atmosphere in the house.
And even so, it’s not the instant heat of a gas fire

Oh that's miserable.

It's no help right now but we used to have those portable 3 panel fires that run from a big bottle of calor gas. Old tech and not the healthiest thing to be burning indoors but might help if this is a regular thing.

Coal is absolutely terrible for air quality so not sure I understand your logic there! Gas fires also negatively affect indoor air quality too. You could get an air purifier and burn wood and then at least you'd be warmer!

MagpiePi · 27/03/2026 20:20

Thanks!

We used to have one of those calor gas heaters as students but I haven’t really got space to keep one here. I’ve also got an electric heater but it’s quite noisy.

I know I’m being a bit miserable about it but I miss feeling the intense burn of my old fire.

There are pros and cons for coal and wood, and I’ve chosen coal - it is smokeless so not quite as bad.

The fact is, I wouldn’t have a stove given the choice but I’m stuck with this one. 🤬

Get an electric blanket, they are brilliant
Home sense do these really long water bottles too, they are brilliant and helped get us through many winters

Headologist · 27/03/2026 20:26

You need an electric blanket. If you're a cold-blooded sort, it will change your life.

comoatoupeira · 27/03/2026 20:27

Sounds like your house has terrible insulation?

No, it has really good insulation. I just like having a direct heat source rather than an ambient temperature, and I want it NOW!

Hot water OP and/or electric throw.

Smokeless coal is generally better for air quality than wood. You can't smell ours outside but you can smell my neighbours that burn wood.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 27/03/2026 20:45

I have an electric fire now (used to be gas), you can put your hand over it and barely feel anything sometimes.

Sometimes I sit in the kitchen with the gas burners on. That gives me my instant heat fix!

hazelberry · 27/03/2026 20:51

Oil filled electric radiator? But I get what you mean about instant heat from a gas fire.

mondaytosunday · 27/03/2026 20:54

ok so replace it. If there’s a multi burn stove then the chimney is probably lined and it’s a matter of running a gas line.
But I empathise- my gas fire ignition stopped working just as the rainstorms came through and I really missed it! I used to have a wood burning stove which I loved but the gas fire is certainly my easier.

Meadowflower2023 · 27/03/2026 20:54

How about getting a small bio ethanol bowl? The heat ours gives out is really good when the doors are closed. Hassle free instant heat. My heating goes off at 8pm so it’s not too hot upstairs for the baby sleeping but on cooler nights I light the fire bowl for a few hours to make a cosy lounge before we go up.

ThePoshUns · 27/03/2026 20:55

get an electric throw, best thing ever

Fair enough. @Headologist is right anyway, a heated throw would make a lot more sense.

MagpiePi · 27/03/2026 21:40

I appreciate all the replies but, I can’t stand the thought of being wrapped in an electric blanket or surrounded by hot water bottles.

I’ll probably get organised and light a fire earlier in the day tomorrow but I want a gas fire NOW and I’m just having a whinge and my own grumpy Friday night pity party. ☹️

Heated throws are okay until you move. I'd rather have a warm room,

1000StrawberryLollies · 27/03/2026 22:18

We have a gas fire and literally never use it, as we don't need it with the heating on.

Pearlstillsinging · 27/03/2026 22:29

The problem is that you are trying to treat your stove like a gas fire. Our multi-fuel stove gets hotter than any gas fire I've ever known.
Light it early in the day and bank it up, so that it burns steadily throughout the day, boost it during the evening and bank it up overnight. The room will still be warm in the morning and you will just be able to add a bit more fuel to keep it in Ours isn't allowed to go out during the winter and it warns the bedrooms above the main room in the original house, so the only heat we have upstairs is in the bathroom.
