I think Australia is better than the UK. My family and friends are here, the weather is better, the pace of life compared to where I lived in the UK (London) is better.

It's an easy answer for me. But it will depend on what angle you're looking at it. Are you trying to decide if you should move to Australia/UK, or are you stuck in Australia/UK wanting to go home.

Who's Sheila?

Is it supposed to be 'she was'??

marmaladejam1 · 29/03/2026 05:32

Not sure OP is thinking clearly but Australia for the win. Mind you it's on my bucket list to spend 3 months tootling around the UK in spring . Adult DC spent 6 months at Liverpool uni and has the tattoo to prove it but was delighted to be home in Australia as he is an outdoorsy sort and he said "it never stopped raining!". I wouldn't mind this and wish we had more rain in the right places. Nowhere is perfect.

estrogone · 29/03/2026 05:47

You seem oddly preoccupied by banquets. Or is it half term?

StormyLandCloud · 29/03/2026 07:34

I never really warmed to Australia when I used to visit my mum who emigrated there when I was early 20’s. I didn’t really like the set up, towns and. Cities, but no village type places between the larger urban areas, loads of brush land, felt somewhat empty somehow. Heat was an issue for me too. I’m terrified of spiders so was on high alert. We saw loads of crocs but no snakes. It was nice to visit but prefer the UK personally

What an odd premise for a thread.

The Easter holidays have started.

An Australian 😉

landlordhell · 29/03/2026 07:47

OP when was the last royal banquet you attended?

No. It is the Easter holidays. Half term was in February.
Apologies for being pedantic.

When j think of those universities and royal banquets it makes me feel proud to be British. Look at whe. Queen Elizabeth cane to the throne and all the pomp and circumstance that went with it what other country has that and when Sheila's 18 she made the speech to serve her country for the test if her life. I still think she was the best monarch we have ever had. So refined and lovely. Long may her legacy live

She was also the Queen of Australia( wrongly )so check your facts. I live in England but am not a royal fan. I am a fan of this country amd Europe im general so it’s UK for me.

I live in Australia so a legitimate question - given proximity to Easter.

Or the OP is making up shit.

Australia is best. At least Victoria and Tasmania are, having declared a month of free public transport in April to get people out of their cars, as well as encouragement to work from home in the present shitshow not of our making. Grin
I've never taken sides before, not least in this bone-headed thread, but am bursting with pride about these entirely sensible steps being taken.

Australia has the Great Barrierr reef ,The Sydney Opera house ,Ayers Rock
All countries will have history and culture

None of that is worth comparing. The indigenous Australians will tell you they have 1000s of years of their culture. Australia was only discovered by Europeans 300ish years ago. They have their own Universities. Doubt they want Royalty bothering them. Also it's a huge place with much of it inhospitable (some from London might say similar to north of Watford)

Advance Australia fair! Just that title says so much more than our dreary anthem about some non elected person being saved by God purely on birthright

Could be because it's a huge place covering different climate/time zones literally on the other side of the Globe in a different hemisphere

Her legacy will be she didn't give f**k about us, she made sure her family got richer and she tried to pay off a victim of her son's misdeeds.
Have you been to those Universities or a banquet or is this just a teary vision of 1950s England with red phone boxes, steam trains and the Imperial system of weights and measures.

Davros · 29/03/2026 09:50

Talking of scary wildlife, I’m in London Zone 2 and we had a mouse running round our hallway yesterday. I did do a Tom & Jerry scream when it ran between my legs quickly followed by the cat. Luckily it squeezed under the door to the cellar and peace was restored. I needed a nice cup of tea to recover. So we do have comparable scary creatures in the UK. I won’t be moving to Oz any time soon, I love the UK and especially my own area but I wouldn’t look down on anyone who lives there or wants to.

OhFeyreDarling · 29/03/2026 10:02

As a citizen of both I still wouldn't say one is better than the other. I love and miss many things about Aus, the nice weather for one ( though I hated the high summer months)

The history is different but it's there and if you want to actually look the indigenous culture is the oldest on the planet. It's currently a bit of a shit show for everyday people but so is here, the world is being run by greedy morons everywhere. Australia has the resources to be an amazing self sufficient country, but people in power are more interested in selling it off piece by piece.

I'll probably move back there one day if they ever get their shit together

ScienceDragon · 29/03/2026 12:02

To paraphrase First Dog on the Moon "Australia is horrible. Please don't come here!".

Trjds · 29/03/2026 12:06

Don't see any reason to move there. Barren desert, snakes, spiders and crocodiles.

I've met numerous Aussies who have moved to London because they like life here more and have quick and cheap flights to Europe. You don't get this in Australia.

Scripturient · 29/03/2026 12:11

Everyone, this is @PerkyOchrePeer. She’s not drunk. Her posts are usually like this, only her posts about Australia often involve tirades about a friend of a friend showing her around but possibly coming on to her, and then failing to keep up a WhatsApp conversation after @PerkyOchrePeer has gone home.

The odd thing about this one is that usually, she’s very keen on Australia, to the point of wanting to travel there for a single week.

Squirrelsnut · 29/03/2026 12:15

I thought Australia was interesting but not for me. However, I can see why some people prefer it. It's all subjective and personal. I dislike heat, desert and watersports, etc. Some people adore them. I like gentle, rolling hills covered in mixed ancient woodland, and old buildings. Some people would find these unimportant.
I couldn't care less about the royals.

You saw loads of crocs?! I visited Victoria and Canberra and Sydney when I was younger, saw lots of spiders, a few snakes, zero sharks, no crocs! I was in rainforest (kuranda) when in Canberra.
