Uh-oh puberty cometh…

The signs are all there. My 12 year old boy has recently started having some decidedly whiffy pitts, greasy hair and is suddenly eating me out of house and home. He only seems to exist in 3 states, just fed, currently feeding or explosively hangry.

He arrived home at 12:45 (half day at school today) and was almost in tears from hunger. This is despite having had toast with scrambled eggs and a yogurt for breakfast, a banana and crisps at break time. He’s had a sandwich, a satsuma and some cheese and crackers for lunch and now he’s just asked me if we have any biscuits!

Of he keeps eating at this rate, I’m going to need another income stream. Is there much call for harassed, perimenopausal mothers on OnlyFans?

Bit weird.

That doesn’t seem like much food to me? Largely bread and fruit?

we have started to ensure an everlasting supply of:

raisins, dried mango slices,
fruit (apples, Pears, bananas etc),
crackers,
cucumbers, sweet bell peppers,
various yoghurts,
Peanuts, hazelnuts, pistachios etc

are ALWAYS in the cupboards.

various sports training through the week, walking to and from school at least 3 times a week. Muscle building burns calories.
oh, and avoid them accompanying you to the supermarket, it will only end horribly Envy

My 12 year old boy has just gone through a few weeks of this hunger.

It's just a growth spurt. I remember it well myself, coming home from school at 12/13 and eating 2/3 bowls of homemade chicken soup with bread, fruit and crackers. This would be after having porridge for breakfast and usually a jacket potato or pasta for lunch. It's like pregnancy hunger and is pretty intense and miserable. (or I suppose pregnancy hunger is like growth spurt hunger which does make sense to me)

It'll ease off soon enough, for a while at least. The spots, eternally greasy hair and slightly whiffy pits seem to be here to stay for the time being though

Oh it's so hard to keep them full! I have three teens - the boys are constantly eating, my daughter not as much but she is the youngest.

They all do sports and when they come home I'm amazed they can put away a substantial snack and then have their dinner and hour later

Not sure if there is similar in the UK or home made versions Kraft Dinner; fake mac&cheese or ramen noodles seemed to do the trick, Boxed cereal (entire box) and jugs of milk.
Good memories.
Zero tolerance for whiffy, honest truth on stinky or greasy hair.

This. He needs protein and fat not just carbs.

oh blimey, I make a light-hearted post about the joys of puberty and then get a pile-on about how I’m not feeding my kid properly. đŸ™„ Ok, before anyone phones the NSPCC, he had sausages for breakfast this morning, a chicken breast with his lunch and he’s about to have lasagna. And he has eggs every day for breakfast in the week. Also, he’s autistic - with some sensory issues around food, so I have to cut him some slack and avoid making meals a battle ground otherwise anxiety will kick in and he won’t eat anything.

for those currently in the puberty trenches with me - I see you! Solidarity Mums. We shall endure…
