Take it off the menu??

Every week my DS’ school post this on the app. Every week. To remind everyone that the following day the sausage roll on the menu is vegan.

what cracks me up as they literally say “many children do not like them” and you have to think to yourself surely by this point you’d just remove it from the menu 😂

Take it off the menu??

well presumably some like them which is why they keep them on. The vegans, for example.

they probably add that as children aren’t understanding they are vegan and won’t taste like a pork sausage roll.

HugeMonstera · 26/03/2026 21:31

The vegan children like them?

Or simply not describe it as a sausage roll when it doesn't contain sausage?

mindutopia · 26/03/2026 21:42

Well, mine only has to have a meal once to know he absolutely does not ever want me to order him salmon pesto pasta bake again in his entire life. Who keeps ordering a meal their kid hates?

They need to have an actual conversation with the parents of the vegan sausage refusers. That said, I wonder if this happens to be vegan parents ordering vegan food for their kids when they don’t want vegan food. 😂 Surely, a vegan child will appreciate a vegan sausage roll. Unless they really prefer the pork sausage but their mum won’t let them have it.

begonefoulclutter · 26/03/2026 22:23

One can't help wondering whether the school has actually asked the vegan children if they like the thing.

YourOliveBalonz · 26/03/2026 22:32

I think people see ‘vegan’ and focus on that. There will be many children that need pork-free choices on the menu which is why it is there.

RainsFall · 26/03/2026 22:38

They should just call it a vegan roll, it would avoid a lot of confusion.

Gurrul · 26/03/2026 22:43

Surely it's not even that hard to make a vegan "sausage" roll that doesn't taste horrible?

But yes, they should just call it a vegan roll.

Renamed · 26/03/2026 23:05

Did piers Morgan write this menu note

YourOliveBalonz · 26/03/2026 23:06

Why is ‘vegan roll’ better? Seeing a vegan sausage roll on a menu tells me it’s something that is a vegan version of the sausage roll - I know what to expect and I think most people would. A vegan roll is really vague - that could be a bread roll with a random filling for all I know.

And a meat roll
or a carnivores roll
or an omnivores roll

the later two relate to using the term vegan roll

The focus is on the word 'vegan' because that's what it is. Suitable for vegans.

I can think of far better pork-free school dinner options than a cardboard sausage roll. I can think of far better vegan ones as well, come to that.

Agree
nothing wrong either way using the term sausage

Vegan roll is very confusing and I would assume it was bread with something inside

A Sausage roll is pastry based
The word sausage is not protected

Placeoftides · 26/03/2026 23:25

I work in a primary school kitchen, unfortunately vegan sausage rolls have been removed from our menu because they are too UPF. I'm devastated! They were absolutely delicious

Agree
school dinners it seems are still fairly crap over here

Hopefully vegans and vegetarians get great alternative non upf foods though

As a vegetarian I feel this about most vegan offerings in cafes and restaurants. Mostly highly processed.

Placeoftides · 26/03/2026 23:45

They do. I'm vegetarian myself so I make sure of it

Lougle · 26/03/2026 23:50

'Sausage' can refer to the shape these days, not just the tube of pork.

Perhaps they should call it a 'vegan imitation meat 'sausage' in pastry.'

Considering when Greggs launched the vegan roll (which fun fact was never meant to be a permanent product!) it was so successful every employee got given a £300 bonus I'd say some people definitely do like them 🤣🤣

Eh?

So if someone says " a sausage roll" you know it's pastry...based on which part? I'm going to assume roll? Not the sausage? 🤔

But "vegan roll" makes you think of bread.

The only difference between the two is the sausage/vegan part. So unless everything sausage is assumed to be pastry im a bit confused 😂 (apologies, in my defence it's late and I need to go to bed 😭)

BeanQuisine · 27/03/2026 00:49

They can retain the word sausage and just call them "yucky vegan sausage rolls", then no other warnings will be necessary.

Yes because “sausage roll” does mean exactly that to pretty much everyone: a sausage in pastry. On the other hand, a cheese roll would mean cheese in a bread roll to most people - not pastry. A vegan roll is not specific enough to mean a person would expect one or the other (but ‘roll’ is more commonly used to mean a bread thing outside of the “sausage roll” context). Are you from outside the UK?

I’m assuming the children aren’t telling their parents that they didn’t like or eat it and then 3 week later when asked again they’ve forgotten all about not liking it.
