Help to solve a family mystery

A friend's almost 96 year old mum often talks about a big store in Knightsbridge that she would go to in probably the 1950s. She can't remember the name of it but is convinced that it's 2 names, something and something. Despite plenty of searches and many many conversations, the name remains a mystery...

Do you know the name of the store this lovely lady is talking about?

Debenham and Freebody? It was Debenhams then but might still have been referred to by the 2 names

PurpleDisco · 26/03/2026 19:00

Army and Navy?

If it wasn't in Knightsbridge it could have been The Whiteley it was the first department store in London.

Woolland Brothers?

Could easily be being remembered as something and something.

I'd say the Army and Navy - I remember going there as a child and it was fabulous

begonefoulclutter · 26/03/2026 19:41

Home & Colonial?

Later changed its name to British Home Stores, then just BHS.

Thank you so much everyone! I'm going to email a list of all the suggestions to my friend and will update the thread

If it was in Knightsbridge, it's most probably Derry & Toms.

StormyLandCloud · 27/03/2026 11:25

Just going to add Peter Jones, albeit it’s Sloane Square but ticks the two names box

goldtrap · 27/03/2026 11:29

Or Shoolbred's, where the lovely Mrs Wilkins shopped when she came up to her Women's Club in town.

Parcell · 27/03/2026 11:33

Derry and Toms was in Ken High St. If it was Knightsbridge it may have been Woolland. Bros.

Edited

Remember all of those except Derrys, they were fab stores, will never see stores like that again.

Fortnum & Mason is on Piccadilly so it wouldn’t be that.
