I'm highly intelligent

OK, clickbait title.

How much do you think about how intelligent you are (or aren't)? What's the view like from where you are? Would you choose to be different?

I've never tested but guess I'm about 125-130. It's a weird level: like being the best sports person in high school. Enough to make it an important part of one's identity growing up (well, mine. Not cool, but we're all anonymous here), but not rare enough to be genuinely noteworthy or impressive to anyone else. I think I'd choose to be much smarter if I could, out of curiosity or vanity, but I also think it might be quite a lonely life up there.

It doesn't mean much. I have a high IQ and am academically well qualified. I am remarkably good at some things (like mental arithmetic and the ability to perform certain tasks to a high standard very quickly). But I am also remarkably bad at some equally important things. My ability to read people is very poor. My patience is low. I am sometimes unintentionally rude. My practical skills are way below average.

So all in all, if you even it out, I'm about as good overall as the next person. Like most people.

This is interesting:

85 to 115 - Two thirds of us have an IQ in this range: the ’average’ IQ is 100.

Over 115 - Only a third of people have an IQ this high

Over 120 - Only 9% of people have an IQ this high

Over 125 - Only 5% of people have an IQ this high

Over 130 - Only 2.5% of people have an IQ this high

Over 135 - the top 1%.

I was told that 1% figure both times (I came out at 155). But it still doesn't mean you're going to be a great success. I quite like being ordinary but capable. The massive vocabulary in multiple languages is useful when there is a need to express profanity, though.

WheretheFishesareFrightening · 26/03/2026 18:41

Mines 155, I used to be a member of Mensa. My intelligence hasn’t really come up since school, maybe a bit when I did professional exams as I won a prize for the highest score.

I have a friend who always tells people I’m the cleverest person I know, and weirdly in a hobby group I joined a few years ago I’ve somehow become the person that gets all the random questions directed at me (such as science questions that come up and have nothing to do to with the hobby). I asked why they keep asking me this stuff and they said I just seem like an oracle (I do know a lot of random stuff), but that’s the only time I’ve considered whether I come across as “intelligent” in recent years.

Pricelessadvice · 26/03/2026 18:43

Mine is 142 but I still can’t understand a lot of written instructions 😂

I feel intelligent in many ways, but absolutely useless in others!

Reqo · 26/03/2026 18:45

I have too spiky a profile so I’ve not been given a number.
Don’t think an iq score is something you can just guess, but also I don’t think iq score = intelligence

Brainstorm23 · 26/03/2026 18:45

Me too. It's been bugger all use in my life so far.

YourSassyPanda · 26/03/2026 18:46

I’m academic but that doesn’t seem to come across in my presentation. I think people think I’m a bit of a bumbler and then are surprised when I easily pass the technical exams which are part of my career structure. I admit this can sometimes be used to my advantage.

ShivWesker · 26/03/2026 18:47

I was tested when I was younger, maybe 13/14, I’m 33 now, and it was 124 back then.

TheWibble · 26/03/2026 18:53

I do think about this. I grew up being told that I was very intelligent, and I'm certainly not stupid. However, in the last few years ive started to realise that im not as intelligent as i thought i was 😂
There's different ways of being intelligent anyway. My Mum was academically challenged, but had a lot of common sense and was emotionally intelligent. My dad was very clever, went to grammar school and was gifted at maths, but his common sense was shocking. I believe he was most likely autistic.
With regards to myself, ive realised that im probably at the upper end of average intelligence, but im very curious about the world so I have a very good level of general knowledge. I think this makes me seem more intelligent that I actually am.

Strawberrryfields · 26/03/2026 18:59

No idea what my IQ is. I’m strong in some areas and weaker in others. I’ve got some people in my life who make me feel utterly clueless and others I’m probably brighter than. I think I’m ok with where I am, the smarter people I know are a bit less social and on the whole have a bit more mental health stuff going on.
I do think my brain has taken a hit since becoming a mum, just have a lot less capacity these days!

moggerhanger · 26/03/2026 19:00

I've been tested at 148, but am very gormless in some areas, especially mathematics. I can make words line up and dance for me, but 2+2 is a challenge. So IQ amounts to diddly squat IMO.

PGmicstand · 26/03/2026 19:00

I don't know. I was pretty slow to catch on to stuff as a child and was incredibly gullible and naiive.
I turned into a know-it-all teen who was obsessed with Oscar Wilde and trying to be witty. Achieved a couple of A levels.
In the workplace, I muddled along - not excelling but not falling behind, or failing tasks.
I went back into education late, just before I turned 40. I had to learn how to learn, and learn how to write assignments and dissertations. I managed to achieve a first in my masters, which I was pleased with - I had worked hard.

I like to keep informed and I like to learn new things, but I don't always remember everything, and despite sometimes failing to grasp simple concepts myself sometimes, I do get irritated occasionally by people who do that exact same thing.

So probably not a high-scorer, but I try.

MyTrivia · 26/03/2026 19:01

I’m fairly average.

Happyjoe · 26/03/2026 19:02

Common sense with me rather than maths, science intelligence. Friend of mine in childhood was impressively smart, now a consultant, sailed through medical school and has an amazing career, glad to say. But common sense lacking and also lack of knowledge of little things, like the names of the suits in a deck of cards.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 26/03/2026 19:04

My husband is a member of Mensa he's very intelligent on paper, brilliant at maths, does a very technical job but lacks common sense and I kick his arse at the 1% club.

BillieWiper · 26/03/2026 19:05

I'm not highly educated at all. But considering that I think I'm intelligent in certain ways. I'd say most people would believe I had a degree. Though I'm also moronic in other areas of my life!

Not that I'd ever lie about it. I think I'm probably a tiny bit above average intellect but due to undiagnosed ADHD and trauma/ depression/ED didn't enjoy school at all. So on paper don't look so great.

MrsChristmasHasResigned · 26/03/2026 19:06

I am 140 something - got tested years ago when I was training in psychological testing. What I notice much more now is I am better educated than a lot of people 0 I know more references, history etc. But I think that is more because i am endlessly curious and read a lot, rather than an intelligence thing. No one else knows my score, as I would never reveal in irl, but I have comments made about my intelligence by others. I am not sure what they see that makes them say that. As I said, I dont equate knowledge with intelligence necessarily.

notacooldad · 26/03/2026 19:06

When i was at school the teachers kept banging on about how clever I was.
I wasnt really.
I wanted to do secretarial skills for my o levels but they said I was to clever to do that.

Things happened at ho.e and I started to skiving - a lot.
I barely scraped through my exams. In fact im not sure if I did, I never went back for my results.
However I would say I am probably average intelligence, I'm good at solving problems and I've had a good career with interesting jobs.

AnotherExpatKiwi · 26/03/2026 19:08

IQ tests are all about being good at IQ tests. I’d rather be demonstratively good at several different things in real life than some abstract test which might mean you’d struggle to change a light bulb.

Myoldbear · 26/03/2026 19:09

You can't really define intelligence when you look at a whole person.
What about someone like Stephen Wiltshire, a total art genius yet not at all in other ways?
It's quite an artificial concept.
Look at his amazing city drawings for example; he can draw intricate architectural designs from memory.

remotecontrolledphone · 26/03/2026 19:13

I've never been tested but dh has and he scored 94. He took his A levels when he was 16 - first person in his sink comp to go to Oxbridge, was the youngest ever director in his dept (big 4) and has held a very senior position in the civil service and now runs a successful business where he speaks on a daily basis to the great and the good.

Dearg · 26/03/2026 19:16

The thing I have learned since leaving the rarified halls of university , 40+ years ago, is that talent does not depend on iq, and many people with average intellects can be outstanding at niche activities.

The other thing I have learned is that there are many interesting people who come into your life, and you can miss them if you are focused only on intellect.

I remember Enron and The Smartest Guys in the Room. Did them no good.

Friend of mine in childhood was impressively smart, now a consultant, sailed through medical school and has an amazing career, glad to say. But common sense lacking and also lack of knowledge of little things, like the names of the suits in a deck of cards.

I've worked with two hospital consultants who were both quite incapable of doing basic household tasks. They even struggled with basic childcare and one told me his worst nightmare was supermarket shopping. He ended up as a professor

I know a delightful lady who has a very low IQ and is in supported living accommodation. She is really astute about people and often tells me things about people which I haven't cottoned onto e.g. she once told me she thought one of our friends was depressed. Several weeks later the friend admitted that she was suffering from depression

frozendaisy · 26/03/2026 19:20

I tested when I found out H (who was in mensa he hasn’t kept up his subscription(?) subs(?) since he no longer needed an extra on his cv) was/is probably was he’s older now, 172.

I was 142 and utterly cross but magnanimously accepted yeah he probably does have a higher IQ but I have more common sense.

Means little.
