Would you tell your neighbour that you have sold your house?

Our neighbours have sold their house, but not told us. We're civil with them rather than friendly but I still find it odd.

They didn't have a sign up, I found out from looking at house prices in our area on Rightmove.

I saw them last week as I needed a chat about having their tree trimmed. Asked how they are generally- no mention of it.

It's interesting to see the varying opinions.

I know it's owner-occupied. It's been SSTC for at least a few months but I'm well aware of the vagaries of the conveyancing process.

Why would they tell you? I wouldn't necessarily tell my neighbours i sold my house, no one else's business

BusyBeeMumOfThree · 26/03/2026 12:46

We told our neighbours we were about to go to market and one of them had a friend who was looking in our area. Sold it without getting as far as the estate agent!

BeWittyRobin · 26/03/2026 12:47

I wouldn’t tell my neighbours as it’s nothing to do with them but then again I’d not expect my neighbours to tell me regardless if we chatted and exchanged pleasantries. Xx

pizzaHeart · 26/03/2026 12:53

I don’t think I would but I’m on a “Hello” only with my neighbors.
I would mention if I were more friendly with them but without a sign up I would only mention it when it’s absolutely certain.
Some people start doing all sorts of building works when their neighbours are selling so that might be a reason why they didn’t mention - just in case.

Yes that seems strange. Are they elderly? My folks were very keen to keep their house sale quiet in case it fell through. It’s not a concern I would have had but sometimes older people get funny bees in their bonnets.

Isthisthisreallife · 26/03/2026 12:59

I wouldn’t tell them if it’s just a civil relationship. If I was never going to speak to them again once I’d moved on, why would they need to know?

Why would they tell you if you are only on civil terms and are not friends. It isn’t any of your business?

Shinyhappyapple · 26/03/2026 13:02

I would let my immediate neighbours know, and if it was summer and I was seeing more of my other neighbours out to chat to, I would also tell them. I would certainly expect for my immediate neighbours to let me know if they were moving too.

Owly11 · 26/03/2026 13:04

It depends on the relationship with the neighbours. I would probably mention it as a courtesy but I wouldn't feel obliged to and i certainly wouldn't expect it of my neighbours.

Villanousvillans · 26/03/2026 13:08

Our neighbours were the same. We were more friendly than civil and I used to take in many of their parcels for them. They didn’t tell another neighbour either, despite her making a fuss of their children and buying them presents for Christmas. In fact they moved without even saying goodbye to this generous lady.

Some people are just rude.

Conservatoryandnottold · 26/03/2026 13:09

Nope, in our old house we were friendly with our neighbour, chatted a lot, helped her out with various things that needed doing, always checked if weather bad if she needed stuff etc and handed in Xmas/birthday cards.

One day builder turned up and started building a conservatory in her garden, not a word to us, bloody great monstrosity that blocked a lot of sun from our patio. She didn't mention it at all when I saw her next, I asked why she hadn't mentioned it she said 'none of our business and she isn't doing anything wrong'. About 4 months later decided we wanted to move, found a new build and sold the current house to the builder. Didn't mention anything, and about a week before we moved out the builder put a for sale sign outside the house. She knocked and asked if it was true and why we didn't tell her. Slightly petty but I just said 'none of your business and we aren't doing anything wrong'.

We moved out, and occasionally see her around the city and stop and say hello but not much more.

Lookingdownthebarrell · 26/03/2026 13:12

Probably because they didn’t want others getting the same idea which may affect their sale price and neighbourhood curiousness about prices etc…people don’t like talking money.

345grey · 26/03/2026 13:12

Are you actually friendly?
Having a chat with them about trimming their trees could mean you aren’t as friendly as you think you are? My neighbour who hates by trees is a PItA (they are 100 yr old and were there long before he bought the house). When I move, he will be a big reason why I’m moving and I doubt I’d make a special effort to tell him.

We are civil and smile when we see each other but I get so anxious every time I see him and I avoid as much as possible.

tryandbepositive · 26/03/2026 13:14

No, if they thought it was relevant they’d tell me but no obligation. What would I do with that information anyway? Say, good luck?

WendyFromTransvisionWamp · 26/03/2026 13:17

My previous neighbour did this. We’ve been neighbours for over 10 years, got along really well, her and I walked the dogs together every couple of weeks, went to curry as couples every six months or so and always had a Christmas pub meal & drinks too.

Only found out they had sold when I asked about their Christmas plans. There wasn’t a sign and it never went on to Rightmove either. Tbh it made me feel quite betrayed. Which may sound like a strong word to use but we live in a very small close and any changes will have an impact (good or bad!) on neighbours. If it was me, I would have given my neighbours a heads up.

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/03/2026 13:38

Yes I absolutely would. I have absolutely wonderful neighbours so of course I’d want them to know. My previous NDN’s were vile and sold their house privately so we didn’t know until the new (lovely) people arrived. I value all of them so I would definitely let them know.

OneCleverEagle · 26/03/2026 13:41

My house is going on the market at the end of April, I have no intention of telling the neighbours (and I won't be having a sign).

Tryagain26 · 26/03/2026 13:44

No I don't think I would tell them until I had a house to move into and I knew for sure I would be moving.
I wouldn't have a sign either because I don't particularly want the neighbours that I am not friendly with looking at my house on Rightmove just to be nosy as they would have no intention of buying it.

IndysMamaRex · 26/03/2026 13:47

No why would you tell? They’re not friends or family.

Sensiblesal · 26/03/2026 13:53

I just don’t know why its any of your business you aren’t even friendly just civil. Not that it makes all that much difference.

i mean if you were friends then I can understand wondering why they had said nothing but thats not the situation

MidnightMusing5 · 26/03/2026 14:08

Growlybear83 · 26/03/2026 07:36

We’re in the process of selling and we’ve not told our neighbours. They are lovely but are real gossips and it’s none of their business why or when we’re moving. The house was sold off market so no-one will see it on Rightmove or the estate agent’s website.

How do
you sell it off market?
