Do you enjoy working for the NHS?

I'm thinking of applying for a job in the NHS. It would be a clerical role. I love hospitals (absolute weirdo!) but have heard horror stories about working for the NHS, including bullying being rife. Is there anyone out there who actually enjoys their job?

I’ve worked for the NHS for 20 years, I used to be so proud to work for them (admin role) but not any more. But that might just be my Trust.

Ahh thank you. I recently attended an appointment and the staff were all so kind and although rushed off their feet, they were very patient and welcoming during my two hour visit there.

I'd like to work nights ideally. Are there ever any clerical/non-skilled medical night roles available? I'm not the greatest cleaner so would avoid that role.

Have a look at NHS jobs online they have everything on there in your area.

Ive never had my leave turned down but then again I work in a 9 to 5 department. They have allowed me to take 3 weeks off next month for my face lift.

I’ve been nursing 37 years. Working for the NHS is increasingly like trying to fill a bath with the plug out. Retiring this year at 55 (can’t fault the old pension mind!) and cannot wait!

I’ve been there 24 years but I’m now being made redundant

Just be careful where you go - LOTS of cuts incoming

I'm an admin manager and you'd be best to look for reception roles in 24/7 settings

It’s a bit like working for the mafia without any of the benefits!

jobs for the boys
nepotism
if your face fits
promotion rarely based on ability
the more capable do more - the less capable are supported to do less
you can be shafted at any given time

my leave is flexible though and sick pay rules are excellent

I’ve worked in the nhs for 17 years, I’ve been clinical and now in management. I do really enjoy my job and I’ve had lots of opportunities for development the next one being my fully funded degree. I get a generous leave allowance and I wfh 2/3 days a week.

Sidge · 26/03/2026 16:29

Yes, but I don't work in a hospital!

I'm a clinical manager in primary care, working in a GP surgery. I have a 60/40 split, 60% clinical face to face/ 40% management.

I do love it, but I always say it's the best and the worst job in the world. It's a privilege to be a nurse but it's relentless and constant, firefighting and crisis management really. The NHS is under immense pressure and a lot of patients are increasingly demanding, rude and unrealistic in their expectations. I'm proud of what we do and what we deliver though.

can anyone explain the application process for some roles in the nhs, some on various sites seem to say its just basic cv and applied and other sites its the full application ?

Spidey66 · 27/03/2026 00:22

I’ve been in nursing since 1986. Aside from a 7 year period in the late 90s/early 00s, I’ve always worked for the NHS. I alternate between being proud to work for them and being totally frustrated at the policies/procedures and lack of resources.

The NHS Jobs website now links to either NHSjobs.com or the trusts' own websites

Virtually no NHS employer will ask for CVs

Look for NHS trusts in your area, find their websites and search for Work With Us tabs
