Do you think I need to see the doctor about my knee?

I went for a long walk a couple of weeks ago and at the end of it I somehow twisted my knee...not sure what happened but I felt something 'go'.

Since then it has hurt....not severely painful at all but a tightness & dull ache that seems to get worse during the day & makes walking hard. There is an odd swelling at the back of the knee which is sore to the touch.

There are no signs of it getting any better. Do you think I need to see the doctor? I would rather not bother the doctor unless necessary (& it would probably take a long time to get an appointment anyway). I don't know if anyone has experience of this type of injury spontaneously getting better.

I’m not sure the Dr would do much. How about a physio appointment?

Yes, you should. You have an injury that isn't resolving.

Look at the NHS page on knee pain - it says to see the GP if knee pain does not improve within a few weeks.

While you wait for your appointment follow NHS advice on ice, painkillers, elevation.

Good advice. I suspect the GP will refer to physio.

Thank you all very much. I will plan to make an appointment with my GP if there is no improvement within the next few days - it is just under 2 weeks since the injury happened.

I am trying to follow advice & keep it elevated in the meantime, worked from home as it seems to be sore when I walk around. I am desperate to start walking again but worried this could make it worse & it is still very swollen at the back where it juts right out.

Sounds like a Baker's cyst

Thank you all again. I thought I would follow up on this....just to confirm I have seen the GP who said it is probably a sprained ligament and should probably resolve in time.

GP advised Ibuprofen to help with the inflammation. It does actually feel better now (though it may be just the Ibuprofen). So fingers crossed it will be better soon.

I had something similar and the GP didn’t see me but referred me to the physio who said the same, strained ligament or meniscus, take ibuprofen, but also to do leg exercises to avoid it happening again in future.

So things like hip thrusts, heel raises, sit to stand (focusing on the weaker leg), leg raises with exercise band.

I also found on YouTube some knee-friendly exercise videos (from a PT recovering from a knee injury) so have been doing those as I have been a bit fed up at lack of mobility.

Thanks very much @BeverleyBrooks I will look into exercises to help avoid it happening again. I am a keen walker so it has been so frustrating not feeling able to walk.
