If you or your kids have a house dust mite allergy, do you use an air purifier? Do you find it helps? If so, which one do you use please

Hugely helps. I use medicair

SummerFeverVenice · 25/03/2026 13:35

Yes it does help. We use Blueair because they are quiet and it’s easy to get replacement filters.

Mine does

Didn’t help ours.

Thanks all. The medicair looks great but is unfortunately out of budget. @SummerFeverVenice which blue do you have please? And @Cornishseasick which one do you have?

thanks @Garman - what do you do instead to help? We dust and hoover regularly but looking into other things too

I find that wooden floors rather than carpets make a big difference. You can also get mattress covers and pillow covers that reduce dust mites.
There are also professional companies that will come and deep clean beds and bedding because of dust mites so you could have a look if there's anything local to you.

SummerFeverVenice · 30/03/2026 19:45

Having a tumble dryer helps as well. Most people allergic to dust mites are also allergic to pollen. Washing below 60C doesn’t kill dust mites on bedding or clothes so you hang wet laundry up indoors or outdoors and the dust mites are still there breeding away plus if outdoors, the laundry gets covered in pollen too!

I also pop my pillows in the tumble dryer for ten minutes on high heat once a week. It fluffs them up like new and kills the dust mites.

This can be done in addition to hoovering and wet dusting.

Bedding/bedding covers suitable for dust mite allergy, no books or teddies or curtains in the room, frequent mopping of the wooden floor, antihistamine. Teddies that are being used for bedtime go in freezer for 24 hours once a week.

I'm allergic to DH dog I finally worked out. Could be the pollen she gets covered in. Would an air purifier help with this?

NerdyBird · 30/03/2026 23:16

is it definitely dust mite allergy? I was told I had that and it turned out to be something else entirely, not an allergy at all.

7238SM · 30/03/2026 23:31

I have dust mite allergy and researched air filters for ages. Several asthma websites can be helpful and recommending removing carpets and soft furnishings which cant be washed.

Lots of air filters I reviewed were woefully poor at actually cleaning the air or were only effective in a tiny, sealed room. Ours was expensive, but I could actually smell the air was cleaner! I agree that sounds ridiculous, but the machine arrived days earlier than planned when I was at work. DH set it up and had it working in 1 room. I had no idea it had arrived and asked him what he'd done in that room because the air honestly felt/tasted much cleaner!

Yes. We use it when our adult DS comes to stay because we have dogs. They really work.

fouroclockrock · 31/03/2026 07:28

I bought a meaco air purifier because their dehumidifier was excellent and I thought it might help but I couldn’t notice anything different at all so I gave it away to someone who also couldn’t see what it did.

MigGirl · 31/03/2026 07:36

It does help DS, but the biggest thing that helped him was having no carpet or curtains in him bedroom. The one we have is no longer available but allergy UK have a recommended list of products, we got ours from the list they had years ago.

honestly, life saver for us. the 6am sneezing fits were doing my head in. we use the idustmite air purifier with the HEPA filter (make sure its HEPA). it just clears out all that invisible dust mite bits from the air so they breathe easier. worth a go!
