Why is it so bloody hard to remove mascara?

Sorry, I’m disproportionately grumpy about this because EVERYTHING WAS FINE until THEY discontinued the Olay Daily Facials I’d used for 20+ years and I still can’t find an alternative which works. (Perhaps I need to be mn fuming!).

I use Max Factor mascara, not waterproof.

I have tried cotton wool pads and washable reusable cotton pads and I find both painful and scratchy.

I have used Garnier Micellar something or other, Nivea cleanser stated to move mascara, Boots basic eye make up remover, Nivea eye make up remover and none of them bloody work. The Nivea even says “no rub” which is a joke. I’m having to rub so hard I’m probably creating extra wrinkles and I’m still left with smudges.

Where am I going wrong? I’m even starting to wonder if I’ve ended up with some fake mascara that’s secretly semi-perm make up!

Clinique Take The Day Off is fab. Keep reading about the Aldi, rose scented, dupe. Has anyone with v sensitive skin used it without any problems?

I use Elf tubing mascara and wash it off with water or a some micellar. It comes right off.

I use this mascara too and take it off with this Nivea remover.

Just baby oil on a cotton pad, then I sweep off any oily residue with Liz Earle (or any) toner. Barely need to rub at my mascara!!

I wear waterproof mascara and remove it easily using just Vaseline.

FlatErica · 25/03/2026 06:22

Nivea eye makeup remover, the one you have to shake up. It’s fantastic, fairly cheap and widely available. I’ve been using it for decades and I used to be a goth so I know about heavy eye makeup! Shake it up and squirt some on a cotton pad, press over your eye and hold for a bit and hey presto!

I use this cleansing balm, it melts off even waterproof mascara really easily.

Ignore some of the reviews, it really is brilliant for the price - just make sure to follow the instructions (which I am convinced is where some people are going wrong with it - use a small amount on your face, then emulsify by wetting your hands with warm water, then take off all the products quickly and easily using a cloth wet with warm water).

Body shop camomile cleansing balm. Washed off with hot cloth. Then a normal face wash/ cleanse again off with hot cloth.

I have to work it in the lashes with my fingers but it’s the only thing that works for me and doesn’t give me allergic reactions/ streaming eyes

bigsoftcocks · 25/03/2026 06:39

Pp item is basically the same thing

TheCurious0range · 25/03/2026 06:43

I use elemis Pro collagen rose cleansing balm , leaves my skin lovely and soft and takes everything off including waterproof mascara, wash off with a hot cloth

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/03/2026 06:43

Clinique Take The Day Off

Tonissister · 25/03/2026 06:47

Have a shower or bath first. The heat and steam soften the mascara. I put a bit of Garnier rose cleanser or that Garnier micellar water you tried ( not quite so effective) on a cotton pad and then just sort of rest my eyelashes onto the pad for a moment. Don't rub straight away, let the cleanser begin to work on the mascara. Then gently wipe side to side, then around the eye. Same again using a clean corner of the pad and more cleanser until lashes are clean. Never rub hard. Any last traces, I use a cotton bud.

Squirrelsnut · 25/03/2026 06:49

Use tubing mascara, never smudges but comes off with warm water. Brilliant stuff.

BreatheAndFocus · 25/03/2026 06:50

Use tubing mascara! A total revelation 🥰 I’ve been using it for around 18 months and will never go back to normal mascara. All I do is press a cotton wool pad soaked in warm water on my lashes and the mascara just comes off all in one go in little ‘tubes’ that I can wipe off my cheek.

Not only that, with previous non-tubed mascara and my high quality make up remover, even when I’d removed it all, over time the blackness left a slight greyish tint to the area around my eyes, which I thought were shadows. Now my eyes look brighter. Also, the morning puffiness is greatly reduced as I’m not having to use a lot of oily cleanser on my eyes.

i use Clinique High Impact or Revolution Wrap Lash if I want a budget option.

Didimum · 25/03/2026 06:50

Tubing mascara comes off really easily (when you want it to).

GoldThumb · 25/03/2026 06:52

Baby oil, gets rid of everything

Mouthfulofquiz · 25/03/2026 06:55

I gently warm up some Vaseline and put it on my lashes and wipe with a piece of tissue - works very well with waterproof as well.

somanychristmaslights · 25/03/2026 07:02

Use an oil balm. It’ll slide right off.

TheKateColumbo · 25/03/2026 07:27

I use Elemis cleansing balm when I wear mascara but a few years ago I started having a lash lift and tint. It’s a total game changer, it looks like your wearing mascara but your not. It’s fantastic.

Yes, me. I think it is better for my rosacae and sensitive skin than the take the day off! I only use it now.

FoxtrotSkarloey · 25/03/2026 07:34

Wow. Loads to work through, thank you! The Nivea one you have to shake is one of the ones I have. I also do the thing mentioned where I dab it on and wait. And yes! to now having the feint grey smudges in the morning.

I use Estee Lauder double wear mascara, it never shifts all-day but an oil cleanser takes it off easily.
I have Simple at the moment. Rub gently onto dry skin, wet hands and rub gently, wash off with face cloth. Clean.

Maybe you've bought tubing mascara by mistake, it's a bugger to get off, even with the recommended hot water and flannels, and it isn't always obvious from the description, I've made that mistake before. I use the Body Shop cleansing balm.

Oh I was going to say I love tubing mascara, really easy to get off! I use the beauty pie one and swear by it.

Namechangerage · 25/03/2026 08:54

I use beauty pie tubing mascara and the ordinary cleanser. You put it on your hand dry and rub it on your face. Then a flannel and warm water. All the little tubes come off and you have no staining etc. really good and it stays on during the day too!
