Is Jesus Christ Superstar (the musical) suitable for Christians?

I have extra tickets to go and see the show. Was thinking of inviting dd's friend and her mum - but they are Christians and I obviously don't want to invite them to something that they will find offensive. I saw it years ago and I don't think it's offensive, but then I'm not a Christian. Friend and mum are not super evangelical or in a weird cult or anything - they're just ordinary people who go to a Baptist church service most Sundays.

it is literally the Easter story. Why would they?

suburburban · 29/03/2026 18:58

Oh yes forgot about the movie, it was always on at Easter

how they all managed to fit in the minibus at the end is one of life’s mysteries

favourite song - shall we start again

It is a play within a play about a bunch of young theatre students staging a musical play about the last weeks of Jesus' life

No it isn’t! Have you actually seen it?

It’s about the last weeks of Jesus’ life but no young theatre students or play within a play to be seen…

The original film is a group of students arriving in the desert to put on a playable the last days of Jesus life.

I'm a Christian and I don't find it offensive. I was just highly confused when it finishes with the Crucifixion, this leaving out...well... the central part of the Christian faith!

But I just put it down to being written by a non believer, which is fine.

Worth watching the Tim Minchin version, he is phenomenal!

Have a lovely time!

Add a Christian, I don't find out offensive, satirical or poking fun. In fact, i love it. Especially the Tim Minchin/Sporty Spice version. I'm desperate to see Sam Ryder but can't afford it and it's probably sold out already.

The movie is a different thing IMO. Still good, but strange. Still not offensive though.

I also didn't find Book of Mormon to be offensive. One lyric was close to being so, but in the context made sense. I can imagine a Mormon might find it offensive though.

I looked online last night just to see because I thought he was phenomenal on the Musicals programme, anyway I was about 1k in the queue so I imagine the tv appearance bumped interest, i think it is pricey though.

That is probably how they get you.

Ironically the Mormon church advertises in the programme, at least they used to. “You’ve seen the show, now read the book”!

now that is a show that I wouldn’t take devout Christians to see as the language and a lot of the content is pure filth. I absolutely love it, but I have seen people walking out in disgust!

I don’t think there should be an issue with Jesus Christ Superstar, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to ask your friends if they would like to go with you. I can’t see that the question would cause offence. There is no mocking of Christianity.

I was just about to comment to say this, the Mormon church is very gracious about the musical Book of Mormon, it gives me respect for them as they could so easily have been furious and sued.
I’m an atheist and I like Jesus Christ Superstar. I like that it was written by atheists who do not believe in the resurrection and that’s why it ends when Jesus dies.
Having said that I don’t think most christians will find it offensive.
Last time I saw it Julian Clary was Pilate, looking forward to seeing Boy George play him this time!

It was a stage show before it was a film.

And a concept album before that.

Neither the concept album nor the stage show are a play within a play.

Tickets from £40. Not too pricey imo, but I'm happy to sit at the back.

Tickets from £50 from LW

CurlewKate · 29/03/2026 19:47

Oh-I didn’t realise it was Boy George. Damn. I would have gone otherwise.

CurlewKate · 29/03/2026 19:49

Anyone on here old enough to remember Jerry Springer: The Opera?

Yes that's how I booked mine, but decided to treat myself so went not too much more. I liked the system which was quicker than the queue for a doctor's appointment 😄

Can't wait to see it. I grew up in Northern Ireland in a Catholic household and my father had the LP.

Anewerforest · 29/03/2026 19:50

I f they go with an open mind they will probably love it. The account of the crucifixion is deeply moving and respectful.

You can still book. Boy George is Herod from 3rd-15th August but not on 8th.
Tickets from £45

When I was a practicing Christian, I found it intensely moving. I think I burst into tears when he came back after the crucifxtion scene. That was a professional production somewhere, about 25 years ago

PersephonePomegranate

not this version so that’s fair enough but I found it to be poking fun at Jesus and how people followed god, maybe I read into it differently than others and shouldn’t have gone in the first place but even the irreverence of the vibrancy of some of the songs just irritated me. Other people read different things into films/ musicals etc do I get everyone’s different but it did offend me a bit.

Serious question, Are you mixing up Jesus Christ superstar with The Life of Brian?

Miranda65 · 30/03/2026 16:12

I saw it in the West End in the 1970s, on a school trip because we were doing it for a dance production. There was one RE teacher who banned his child from going because he thought setting the Passion story to rock music was disrespectful. However, it was 50 years ago, and very much different times. I think most Christians probably find it very moving.
