DS theory test in a week, has done no revision

DS has his theory a week today. Was bought all of the books, flashcards etc as well as the official app, and I've asked him repeatedly if he's confident, feels ready, would like me to test him. "No, im fine. Feel OK about it" etc.

Asked tonight if he's done ok on the hazard perception parts, and its basically come to light that he's done fuck all.

Im fuming. We're £1000 into practical lessons and he's got a little car waiting for him, being gifted by his grandparents. Seems to be enjoying the lessons, so i dont get it. So annoyed by the apathy!

What are the chances of him passing? They're not gonna be good are they?

He will fail
and learn.
Will be what another 50 to try again?

Suedoh · 23/03/2026 19:48

He will definitely fail I'm afraid! You need some knowledge to pass. It's a learning curve

CremeEggThief · 23/03/2026 19:49

Make sure he pays for his next theory. Only way he will learn!

Zapx · 23/03/2026 19:49

Did he pay to take it or did you? I’d be surprised if he passed with doing no prep but not impossible…

DuchessDeuce · 23/03/2026 19:55

Its a long time since I did mine, but i remember having to study for it, and im reasonably intelligent!

Argh. Im so pissed off! Fucking teenagers!

Unlikely I would say as it’s quite tough, but a week is still a week and he can cover a lot in that time. My DS sat his last week and worked fairly hard for it (although he’s a classic cram reviser!) and passed but not with flying colours! The pass mark is high.

We said right from the start we would pay for the theory test one time and that’s it. If he fails it’s because he hasn’t done enough work to pass it and he has to pay out of his own pocket next time. It was enough of an incentive.

Araminta1003 · 23/03/2026 19:57

If he is bright, he can probably cram it. DD passed recently with almost 100 per cent and did just a few hours in total pretty last minute and being tutored by a friend who had recently passed too. She does however always pull of tests, it is her thing. But he does need to get on the app and learn the stuff.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 23/03/2026 19:57

There’s an option to postpone it I’m sure

PonyPatter44 · 23/03/2026 20:00

Meh, it's annoying, but he'll either pull it out if the bag or learn the hard way. I wouldn't be paying for the re-test if he fails, though.

DuchessDeuce · 23/03/2026 20:03

Definitely not paying for a retest!

Will come back and update if a miracle happens! 🤣

gamerchick · 23/03/2026 20:04

He will fail OP. He's not going to be able to guess his way through that fucker.

Whereisthesun99 · 23/03/2026 20:07

You can re arrange to a different date, there was a slightly different link , google re arrange theory test and it comes up, you will need his driving licence number, and theory booking number and so long as it’s minimum of 3 days excluding Sunday it should be changed for free.

Araminta1003 · 23/03/2026 20:08

What is weird is that most of them want to get a car to impress their friends so casually mention that it is a shame he won’t be able to drive his friends around in the car any time soon if he won’t pass the theory test next week. You cannot book the practical without passing theory and at least where I live, it took 6 months to get a practical test date!
DD has all sorts of ambitious plans of her and her mates doing uni open days together driving there and clearly that won’t happen as the parking etc is dire in some of the uni towns they want to visit. But it is what is driving them to pass both theory and practical.

SixSevenShutUp · 23/03/2026 20:09

You also have to practice the hazard perception test as there is a knack to it. Just clicking when you see something isn't going to be precise enough, you have to judge the moment the hazard 'develops'. It would be sensible to postpone the test until he engages with the material.

newornotnew · 23/03/2026 20:11

If he fails it's a life lesson for him.

If he passes it's a life lesson for you.

Either way, it's a minor matter as he can pay for a retake.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 23/03/2026 20:11

Neither of mine did much until a day or two before the test then just crammed it (even then not as much as I'd have liked!) I was very clear that a retest would not be funded by us!

One got 1 mark over the pass mark and the second one got 2 marks over, the jammy so-and-so's. (2nd one was most delighted that he'd done better than his older sibling in an exam for the first time ever 🤣)

This is a good learning experience, much lower stakes than any of the other exams they're doing about now. Deep breaths!

AOBMGB · 23/03/2026 20:14

I think a week is enough if he knuckles down now. If he has the official app, he just needs to take the mocks again and again until he’s familiar with the answers. The app isn’t allowed to use the exact wording of the test but it’s very very similar.
I’d recommend him watching a YouTube video on how the hazard perception portion of the test works so he doesn’t over click (this can be an automatic fail as it’s to detect cheating) and then practise that too.
I passed first time doing this a few years ago 😊

Foxytights · 23/03/2026 20:22

Both mine crammed it on the app in less than a week. If he applies himself now there’s still time.

ladygindiva · 23/03/2026 20:22

I have mine in a fortnight and I've also done fuck all yet and I'm 51. This thread has prompted me to make a start!

FrangipaniBlue · 23/03/2026 20:26

If he can literally spend every spare minute working through the app it’s possible.

I had one with a similar apathetic attitude….. took 3 attempts to pass……. he was ready for the practical weeks before the third and final attempt, think that was the kick up the a$$ he needed.

Mcdhotchoc · 23/03/2026 20:35

I insisted that dd pass her theory before I paid for lessons. It took her 2 goes and she studied

ThroughTheRedDoor · 23/03/2026 20:36

This was me. A cocky 17 year old.

Failed.

tnorfotkcab · 23/03/2026 20:45

Presumably he was the same for GCSEs?;

JulietteHasAGun · 23/03/2026 20:50

Dd passed with about 30 mins of hazard perception practice the day before and no other cramming that I was aware of at all. I think I bought her a book, maybe she read that in bed at night.

Stade197 · 23/03/2026 20:51

I had to re-do my theory earlier this year as it ran out (it took a long time to pass my practical 🙃) and it was harder this time so many extra questions about first aid, defibrillators, car sensors etc

If he isn't taking it seriously then stop.paying for practical lessons until he can study and pass his theory
