Tell me if this clematis I’ve planted looks right

I know you can’t see how deep I dug the hole, but I followed a video and pretty sure it was deep enough, the base of the stem is in the ground to keep it cool, I put compost in the hole and also pebbles around the base. It’s facing east so will get a good 5-6 hours of sun. It’s Montana. Worried it’s going to die now I’ve planted it…

They are pretty hardy. I have a few, one of which is in a pot with about 2 inches of soil and its full of flower buds.

Montanas are pretty bombproof - your planting looks fine.

I agree with the others, your planting looks fine and montanas are pretty tough. By this time next year it'll be up that wall and rewarding you with gorgeous flowers in April and May. If I were you, I'd stretch some gardening wire across the wall at intervals or fit a trellis so that it has something to cling to as it grows.

What is it going to climb up? It’s easier to put the supports in first to avoid damaging the plant whilst doing it. Clematis climb by hooking onto the supports by their leaf stalks. They are not self clinging so will need something to help it cover the wall.

Do guard against slugs, mine got completely ravaged by slugs when it was new.

I’ve got a few bamboo trellis’ I can stick on the wall, also a big standalone metal arched trellis I could also stand over the plant in the soil, if that makes sense ! Injustice treating in getting it established first though before I start adding stuff to the wall
