Anyone tried overglasses? (to wear over normal prescription glasses)

Has anyone tried overglasses? I.e. lighter/thinner/larger sunglasses that go over your normal glasses. They keep popping up for me on Insta - they just hear me cursing every time I switch between my prescription sunnies and my normal ones 🙄

I like the look of them but am sceptical that they'll fit all glasses?!

I have them, I love them. Yes they are huge, but I only wear them for driving so I don’t care what I look like.

after decades of trying prescription sunglasses, colour changing ones, flip ups etc I have settled on an enormous range of fit over glasses. They wouldn’t go over really huge thick frames but go over my regular sized ones just fine. They are so easy and v cheap on Amazon and Ali express. I have a range of colours and styles and love them - cheap and simple.

Get prescription lenses that react to the sun.

Oh interesting, thanks all! I didn't know it was as simple as Amazing so will have a scout around, thanks @HermioneWeasley. My usual glasses are fairly neat in terms of lense and frame - deffo not the larger end of the spectrum - so that sounds like it would work.

@losted I've considered those but I also wear contacts quite a bit and can't justify the cost of new prescription glasses with upgraded lenses (i.e. pricier lenses!) at the mo.

I love mine, they are huge but I’m happy with that!

MistyMountainTop · 23/03/2026 12:40

I have some, I found them OK when sitting down but I struggled walking in them for some reason

CMOTDibbler · 23/03/2026 12:41

I have Bloombelle ones, and after a lifetime of faffing with prescription sunglasses they make such a difference. Mine are so light they don't hurt like old style over glasses did and so much easier than constant juggling - plus cheap so I can keep pairs in the car etc

JacknDiane · 23/03/2026 12:44

I have them for night driving when the glare of oncoming cars headlights is too much.

DappledThings · 23/03/2026 12:45

I am incapable of keeping hold of a pair of sunglasses. They vanish. So I have multiple pairs of cheap supermarket ones in various places and just wear those over my glasses if I'm not in lenses. Mildly ridiculous but it works fine. So I'm sure ones actually designed to go over glasses would be grand.

My glasses are Mint Magnetics, so prescription with fitting sunglass overlays - a game changer for me!

They always make you look as if you’ve got sunglasses on indoors though.

Octavia64 · 23/03/2026 13:12

I used to have them many decades ago.

not great for sport or anything active

SkaneTos · 23/03/2026 13:17

My mother uses overglasses over her prescription glasses. It's mostly when she is out walking, or riding in a car.
She loves her overglasses! They are not the expensive kind, but they are great for her.
I think she looks good in them, and she is comfortable wearing them.

Malariahilaria · 23/03/2026 13:21

Yes I have the bloombelle ones. Got them last summer for holiday. Great for driving and sitting on the beach. I didn't want those reactive lenses or the prescription ones that are permanently dark because I always need to take them on or off. They're not 'cool' but they are fantastic.

DiamandaTheGreat · 23/03/2026 21:06

This is really useful, thanks everyone.

Never heard of Mint Magnetics, will take a look.

I don't need them for sport - more for reading on the beach, sitting around in the sunshine, sightseeing etc. For anything properly active I'd just wear contacts and normal sunnies.

I have a pair of Zips prescription glasses that come with a magnetic polarised sun clip. I'm on my second pair as I love them! you can easily clip on/clip off the sunglasses with one hand as you drive and they're slimline, the clip-ons match the frames and they are pretty robust.
