Amoxicillin for child left out overnight, still safe to use?

My husband left our daughters amoxicillin out overnight it’s been about 11 hours. Is it still safe or not? The house is cold we haven’t had the heating on at all. No pharmacies open yet being Sunday morning so I don’t know how to find out at this time so I was hoping someone would have some advice. Thanks

Google seems to think it's okay (they lead me to several websites which all seem to give the same answer)

How much do you have left in this course?

dairydebris · 22/03/2026 07:59

Its safe, might be very slightly less effective. Still use it.

Call 111, speak to the pharmacy service, they will advise better than the internet.

I would use it .
Amoxicillin can be maintained at room temperature but preferable in fridge,
Remember OP that many places it is hot and humid all year round so the advice is aimed globally.

Safe, or effective?
Safe, definitely, effective? most probably.
I'd carry on using. X

Edited

I’ve just rang them and the gave me the number for a pharmacy near me that’s open today and told to me ring and ask them at 10am

That’s what I would do then. Risk is likely low, however, you’ll be receiving advice in here from non-pharmaceutical professionals (including me). Personally for the sake of one morning dose, I’d wait.

I realise I am going against the trend of answers, but that’s my genuine opinion.

KnickerlessFlannel · 22/03/2026 08:38

DH said personally he'd use it and give to our DC in similar circumstances but professionally someone may be forced to give different advice- he's not a pharmacist but leads clinical trials

Fortheloveofpenguins · 22/03/2026 08:44

ChatGPT recommends not using it as it may not treat the infection properly and also there’s no way to tell if there’s been any bacterial growth. It does suggest that if you speak to a pharmacist, they may replace it.

This.

I needed to take some amoxicillin for dc on a flight, so it would have been out of the fridge for about 12 hours. Both the prescribing doctor and the pharmacist said it wasn’t a problem at all. They didn’t even recommend ice packs.

DiscoBeat · 22/03/2026 08:52

I'm so relieved it was the medication and not the child that was left out all night!
I would use it, but phone the pharmacist to see if they recommend replacing it.

We've had antibiotics for nearly a century, if it was unsafe to give them if theyd been out of a fridge for a few hours I think we'd all know that

I'd give them without a thought, even if the effectiveness is slightly reduced (I don't know if that is the case) it's obviously better than none

I'm a retired pharmacy technician. Amoxicillin is fine at room remperature.
