Quoted work

When someone prices a job for you and say its 3000-3300.

Some things were not done as wasnt needed and then there were quite a few extras is the extra £300 to cover additional work or something else ie, taken more time than initially thought for the quoted work.

What’s your question?

You need to be a bit more specific

Brighteyedtriangle · 20/03/2026 08:48

The 3000-3300 is the extra 300 for variations to initial work like a contingency for unseen repairs that may be needed or is it for materials or time that they havent accounted for on the main quote

The extra £300 could be for any of those things surely

Yes it is.

Ok, kitchen work with one example

Damp found so additional plaster needed taking off and adding sealant to flat roof.

Now would some/all of this be covered with the £300 or would this be just extra.

Lots of others but I am just trying to figure out if the quote from and to covers anything or do contractors normally go with the higher price and add anything extra on top of the highest price.

I would expect them to clarify what the discrepancy is

i.e. - it will be £3000, but when we remove X we may find Y in which case there will be an extra £300 to sort it

If you add any extra works you shoud agree a price as they come up

Brighteyedtriangle · 20/03/2026 08:56

Thanks, I knew there would be extra costs but now its time to balance it all out I just wasnt sure if I had a case with the fact there was a contingency in it anyway or if they would say that covered something else

It depends what it says in the quote. 😂 It should be itemised to a degree and tell you where costs are coming from.

We are having building work done at the moment. The variations in the quote account for differences in materials used (we have options of cob and brick, all brick, cob, brick and some stonework). Some variation will be to do with extent of work that might need doing, for example, an extra section of load bearing wall that needed replacing when it started to crumble. Some may be to do with variations in labour costs (skilled vs unskilled contractors who have different day rates).

The quote should lay all this out for you though. That’s the whole point of a quote.
