Getting more protein into breakfast

With food restrictions. I’m starting ADHD meds and have been advised by the prescriber to eat more protein in the morning. This will be challenging.

I can now eat almonds after a successful food challenge test but still need to test other nuts.
I don’t eat meat, fish, eggs and try not to eat UPFs too often so wouldn’t add protein powder to anything. I did try some once and it gave me terrible stomach cramps over the few days I tried it. I have IBS and my gut did not like it at all. I don’t think I could stomach cooking anything beyond porridge on a school day morning and don’t have loads of time. I’m very active and need carbs at breakfast otherwise I feel faint by 9am. adding Greek yogurt to porridge wasn’t a pleasant experience and if I have yogurt for breakfast it’s not enough to keep me going. The school run is a 3 mile round walk and it’s hilly.

I’m currently eating leerdammer and breadsticks. I’ve had 18g protein from the cheese. I’ll have hummus and breadsticks for lunch as always. Dinner I’ve no idea. Maybe vegetable soup.

I don’t think I’ll succeed at this especially as the meds are likely to decrease my appetite.

What could I eat?!

Surreal is full of sweeteners unfortunately. I saw an advert for it the other day and thought it might be good for Ds whose ADHD is made worse by additives and preservatives but when I read the ingredients it’s UPF. He’s fine with sugar but sweeteners are terrible for him and give him stomach cramps. I wish they’d stop putting sweeteners in everything. They taste awful and aren’t good for us. He only has porridge, or shreddies.

My porridge smell of playdoh 😂

Could not agree more re adding sweeteners. Bloody sugar tax just made everyone add sweeteners which are far worse for you. Especially with IBS. Just a thought, sorry! This thread has given me some good ideas though, thanks

The higher protein is to do with helping the drug work rather than reduced appetite although with only eating two meals a day I need to make sure I make those meals count. It’s broccoli and cheddar soup tonight for dinner.

Thanks. That’s interesting, they didn’t tell me that. I was told eat high protein because you might lose your appetite. Nothing to do with them working better.

The protein makes the drugs more effective due to providing the essential amino acids that the neurotransmitters need. It’s also helpful for preventing side effects by slowing the onset of the drug and preventing crashes in the afternoon as the medication wears off according to Google.

Sorry OP if I missed this. Are you only having soup fo dinner as you aren’t hungry due to the meds?

DS is normally ravenous after they wear off in the evening.

I’m worried with no lunch then just soup for dinner you aren’t getting enough nutrients.

What’s wrong with soup? Soup is my usual dinner. I make a variety of veggie soups and will happily eat it most days. Today’s has onion, garlic, potato, broccoli, cheddar and organic stock. I’ll eat a big bowl of it. Other soups are red lentil, carrot and broccoli. Sweetcorn and roasted peppers. Butternut squash and carrot with chilli. Cauliflower, red lentil and peppers. Soup is one of the few foods we will all eat although sometimes it’s three different soups 🙄
I’m off to my mum’s today to look after her and I’ve got babybels in her fridge that I can snack on although I don’t normally eat until I get back home for lunch around 2pm. I’m not still long enough when there. I’m averaging 1400 calories a day so not bad at all.

Soup’s great in many ways but it doesn’t have much protein. If it’s a cheesy or creamy or pulse based soup it might have a bit but still not loads. Can you add a big handful of nuts or seeds when you have soup? And maybe have some cheese or cottage cheese on the side?

Pinklightning · 23/03/2026 10:44

There’s probably around 12g protein in the broccoli and cheddar soup. Not amazing but if I get as much as I can earlier in the day it’s okay. I’ve never eaten lots of protein and it’s never been an issue.

Sorry OP I don’t think this is enough food for one day? You won’t be getting enough nutrients/calories/protein….

You say you are active? You need carbs for energy. Breadsticks aren’t
enough.

There’s nothing wrong with soup - broccoli and cheese soup sounds healthy but for an evening meal you need to bulk it out more.

Are you able to speak to a dietitian?

Delatron · 23/03/2026 12:21

1400 calories is not really enough for an active person who is not trying to lose weight.

Pinklightning · 23/03/2026 14:46

When I said it’s not bad, I meant that considering I’ve barely got any appetite I’m still managing to get a decent amount of calories in. I got the bus to my mums instead of walking the mile uphill carrying a heavy rucksack. We might get the bus back from school today too instead of the other mile uphill. We are away tomorrow so Wednesday won’t include the usual 10 miles I walk. I’ve been gardening this morning and have walked 5 and a half miles so far. I’ve had a small
lunch so better than yesterday. It’s just going to take time to adjust to the medication while I go through titration.

Cottage cheese and quark. You can bake lovely bagels with 200g cottage cheese, flour and baking powder. Google, theyre suoer easy! Quark is great with fruit, berries and can be used for baking too. Loads of protein in both. And have you tried quinoa?

HellenicOfTroy · 23/03/2026 21:02

Have you tried blending white beans into soup for extra protein? It gives a nice, slightly creamy texture.

ImogenBrocklehurst · 24/03/2026 16:21

Homemade granola, with seeds and almonds or other nuts, with yogurt and honey or maple syrup: or overnight oats with seeds/nuts/fruit
