Hi all
at what age did you give your child a more grown up bedroom and get rid of all the toys?
my DD is going to be 12 in June. She is in year 7. She still has a barbie caravan and a dolls car which takes up quite a lot of room. But she is not really playing with toys, dolls or barbies now. She has a lovely dolls house with some nice bits of furniture and dolls. I would probably keep that and store in the loft. The other toys I can give to charity.

Your child will tell you when the time is right. She will start nagging you!

Yes this, usually about the time they go up to secondary school.

We just transitioned dd13 in October, someone moved out so rooms were all reshuffled and now she’s upgraded dolls to a vanity unit 🫣 although still has all of her Ty beanies and jellycats and she’s obsessed with rabbits and has a ton of rabbit stuffed toys. We built it in to the bunk bed so it’s like a teddy wall. Hard to explain on here but keeps them all tidy 😂

10 for DD and then again when she loved into the loft conversion at 12. For DS I think 7 but only because it co-incided with a house move.

Basically we moved the toys out on agreement when they stopped playing with them, and got them LFC bed spreads instead of dinosaur and trucks. Bought them pin boards for putting their merit certificates etc. up and took down wall decals. It was a gradual process and done by the time they were ten ish.

It's an ongoing process, isn't it? We seem to be continually (every few months) going through DS room to remove outgrown clothes, go through books or other possessions with him to purge old/unloved ones and make space for new, etc

We last changed the furniture when he moved out of a cot-bed before starting school (though more bookcases have been added) and anticipate that it might need changing again in early teens to switch from a cabin bed to an adult single.

A few posters have come and gone but the wall colour and curtains are pretty neutral/adult-suitable already and have carried on from 'nursery' to 'tween bedroom' without an issue so far. We switched to plain coloured bedding when the cot-bed went, so that is still fine.

Erm... sorry to have to remind you, but those toys are not yours to give away. They are hers.

Perhaps you could ask her whether she'd like her bedroom redecorated, new rug, duvet covers, cushions etc, and bring up the question of whether she still wants those things then. You can't decide for her, she needs to be ready to say goodbye in her own good time.

We moved house when I was 12 and my parents rather firmly told me that most of my toys would not be moving house with us. I'm still pissed off about some of them, and it was a very long time ago.

Transitioned from cabin bed to double when DS went to university - meant we had the time and space to rejig his room. Redid the decor at about 13...he built himself a bigger desk when doing his A levels.

Catlady007007 · 19/03/2026 23:28

I think it happens gradually unless you are doing a bigger job e.g. getting new wardrobes?

For DC1, I think a desk was asked for, then bookshelves and it happened naturally.
For DC2, we were changing the room layout and ended up taking down the existing homemade artwork and curtains. When the room was painted, DC2 decided to get re-jig things.

About 10 for my son, we moced house so got rid of a lot of stuff. Though hes not really a stuff kind of person, could live his life with his bike, football phone and playstation and no other posessions.
