Petrol, diesel or electric? What’s the best bet at the moment

In need of a new car (hopefully not buying at a stupid time but needs must)

Cant decide what to go for. I drive around 40miles per day with no option to charge at work and travel for work once or twice a month (4 hour trip so 8 hour round trip)

What will be best to buy and run that will last me the next 3 years or so? I see so many electric vehicles but I was concerned about resale and the hassle of charging. Then again with the price of diesel maybe it is the way to go.

thanks!

Second hand?

7238SM · 19/03/2026 15:34

Are you buying brand new or 2nd hand? There is SO much depreciation from a new car that I'd never consider it. We recently bought a 2nd hand, petrol car. We did alot of reviews about hybrid, electric etc etc and stuck with petrol. 1 thing I'd never realised is that some people get car sick from electric cars due to the lack of normal car sounds. Even those that don't normally get car sick.

Ilikewinter · 19/03/2026 15:35

Not diesel! DH has an electric car, sooooo cheap to fill up from home, but you'll need to factor in the cost of a home charger. I'm still on petrol. What's your budget and what else are your 'must haves? ' that might narrow down your options?

Electric. I would never choose to go back to petrol
We have had now 4 years and never any issues

Consider a second hand vw id4 pro if you can find. They have decent range, whilst not being extortionate

AlastheDaffodils · 19/03/2026 15:41

Do you have a driveway so you can charge at home? If so electric could work well. If not it’s harder.

Also what’s your budget? If you’re doing four hour journeys you presumably want to be able to do that in one charge. Lots of modern EVs will do that comfortably but probably not the EVs you can buy for £10k.

Bordercollierun · 19/03/2026 15:48

Sorry should have added. I’m looking at second hand (2020 up) probably only up to 20k which seems like not much these days.

I need a very large car or van. 7 seats. Considering a Ford tourneo, berlingo, Spacetourer, caddy van etc.

I do have a driveway but no charger, wouldn’t be able to afford one either so would be hanging wire out the window 😂

Petrol then, based on your update. All the way.

Bordercollierun · 19/03/2026 16:09

Thanks everyone! I’ve seen a few brand new electrics (berlingo or Spacetourer) for around 18k but the petrol version is almost £30k. Why the huge price difference just demand?

I have an electric.

They couldn’t fit a home charger so I’m charging at public stations. It is cheaper than petrol but not a lot.

if you can’t sort a home charger I’d go petrol

Im just charging with a 3-pin at 10A. It’s slow but I don’t do many miles so jus charging overnight once a week is plenty for me. The socket is brand new and plug isn’t even getting warm so I have no worries there.

Octavia64 · 19/03/2026 16:31

Ah ok that’s worth knowing. I’m looking at getting a normal plug charger. Glad to hear it works for you

In which case an electric and the cost of a home charger (£800-£1500) looks like the cheapest option for you.

SiobahnRoy · 19/03/2026 16:39

I have a plug in hybrid, it does about 40 miles on electric charge which covers my daily commute, with petrol engine back up for longer journeys.

TheFairyCaravan · 19/03/2026 16:45

I’ve got an EV. I’ll never go back to petrol or diesel. ATM I pay 7p per KWH to charge, overnight, at home. From April 1st that’s going down to 3.49p. That covers all the electricity in the house so I run my washing machine and dishwasher through the night too.

Having an EV has saved us hundreds of pounds in fuel costs.

Caspianberg · 19/03/2026 16:58

Your problem is 7 seats. There every few electric cars that have 7 seats. They either are very expensive or very poor mileage

There is the peugeot E 5008 which is a 7 seater with better range, but I’m not sure the second hand market as it’s relatively new

I’ve found that.

Theres a Spacetourer but I believe the milage is terrible. Berlingo maybe slightly better?

I really do need a minimum of 6 seats (so could have done a van with 3 and 3)

Then Kia pv5 but very expensive!

You could look at the Dacia jogger 7 seater. It’s a hybrid. No frills, but pretty decent price.
But it runs on around 20% electric so you would benefit on your local trips.

UniquePinkSwan · 19/03/2026 17:15

Electric for me. I get free electricity at work and even at home I get 350 miles for £3.50

66babe · 19/03/2026 18:43

I have a hybrid petrol Puma
Brilliant on fuel , maybe not big enough for you

xanthomelana · 19/03/2026 18:46

Given the size you need I’d say diesel. I’d imagine 7 seats is going to be a big car so you should get better mpg from a diesel.

Bordercollierun · 19/03/2026 18:53

Neither the Dacia or puma are big enough sadly. It has to be a full size 7 seater not a pop up seat type if that makes sense. We also have a pair of big dogs who need to go in.

Love my electric.

Ilikewinter · 19/03/2026 20:05

Ah OK, so with that update then I agree with PP, your probably looking at diesel for the size of the car you need. Have done an autotrader search?
