Paid off mortgage today, how did you feel when yours ended?

We paid off our mortgage today! I think I will need some time to get my head around it.

Do you remember when yours was paid off, and how did you feel? We were in a position to do so courtesy of an inheritance, so mixed feelings on that.

Felt no different than when we were paying it.

I had a bit of faff with the actual act of paying it off, which took the shine off.
But after I had clicked the final button, I took a screenshot, told some close family and went back to my work day.

It was all a massive anticlimax really, none of this popping champagne, spending the payment on a holiday or whatnot. And now it barely even comes to mind.

EDIT: the one thing I AM proud of is that I did it all by myself, in my mid 40s. No inheritance, no partner, just me plugging away at overpayments for years.

I had investments and cashed in a couple of them to pay off mortgage. Yes, I’d have loved the investments to keep for me, but it was the right choice to pay off the mortgage earlier. I felt relieved.

We paid it off a couple of weeks ago. We were on holiday abroad and, due to a few things on the day, we didn’t get to celebrate properly, unless a McDonalds at midnight counts for that. We haven’t told anyone yet, apart from DCs and parents. Still waiting on any paperwork, so far just a letter from the bank with zero at the bottom.

We paid our 12-year mortgage off after 8 years and this was down to DH insisting we put any extra cash towards it.

It was his first mortgage and my second, so I was quite happy to go full term but he was never comfortable with it and feared losing his job.

As it turned out, about 18 months after we'd paid it off, he got ill and was off work for around 11 months and was about to go from half pay to zero pay before he was well enough to resume so it was a bit of a godsend as the extra financial pressure it would have put on us would not have helped his recovery.

On the day we paid it off I took a screenshot of the zero balance!

We've told very few people that we've paid it off in case they think we're being smug.

I would be delighted.
As the oldest first time buyer at 52..I will be paying til 74 :(

Strangely anti climatic to be honest and I never really think about it now.

Paid mine off when I took voluntary early retirement, used the lump sum, very relieved and even now 14 years later I still get a good feeling that’s it’s mine and I am safe and won’t be made homeless.

We paid ours off today!
It feels a little surreal. Think will sink in when we get paid for March and that large deficit is no longer there. My ILs helped us out otherwise won't have been possible. So no deaths thankfully, early inheritance. Very grateful. We are early 40s

Oh god I wish we didn’t have a mortgage!! Such a huge chunk of cash every month - we’d be rolling in it if we didn’t have that. Thanks to Liz Truss it’s a lot more than it should be really too and everything else has gone up to a frightening amount!

Feelingroggy · 19/03/2026 22:42

A lovely feeling of calm maybe more than the huge excitement I'd expected. We'd downsized to a cheaper but bigger house that needed a lot of work, and at the time we paid the mortgage off three years later it was all starting to come together, so it was nice timing. Our house is nothing fancy but we all absolutely love it.

YellingAway · 19/03/2026 22:48

It was such a relief knowing that no matter what happens about our jobs we would never be homeless. Then I got the title deeds and they were amazing as the building was from the late 1800’s and they told all about the whole development of the area.

Relief and excitement. Went online to look at my nil balance on the mortgage account and there was nothing. The account had disappeared so there was nothing to see. I wanted emoji streamers or something when I went on it. Ta dah, you have completed your mortgage ! So that was a damp squib !
