Trump - I want to understand.

A couple of relatives think Donald Trump is the bees knees, is a far better president than Biden and Obama, has a string of lies connected to him about felonies, possible Epstein connections, and is the very man to fix USA.

I don’t personally see it, but I don’t like how polarised so many things are so I’m trying to understand their view point, but because it’s such a divisive topic it’s difficult to find anything that doesn’t fall into the “he’s a pedo rapist” or the almost cult-like he can do no wrong approach.

I like balance. I believe it’s lacking in today’s world of SM algorithms. Please help me find some balance re Trump so when my relatives inevitably bring up this subject again I can contribute to a conversation without them thinking I’m brainwashed by left wing media.

Why not ask them why they think this and go from there?

NFPorterkeeponkeepingonNsoul · 18/03/2026 11:15

Unfortunately if that's their mindset even if you presented rational evidence all about Trumps failings and there are many they still wouldn't see him for what he is.

From talking to friends and family in the US, you need to understand that the Democrats pissed a lot of voters off (a) by running Biden a second time when he originally said he wouldn't run and (b) when they finally realised that he was a no-hoper by replacing him with Harris who spectacularly refused to distance herself from Biden's unpopular policies,

Compared to what the Dems were offering, Trump looked good.

Remember he not only got the Electoral College he got the popular vote as well.

I have, but there are no real explanations. Lots of sound bites, lots of “Biden had dementia”.

Yes I understand this, and I do feel that the last few years have led to many believing Trump was the better option.

What I don’t understand is how people in the UK are hero worshipping him, and I’ve yet to find any real reasons for it.

Ok.

There is a huge difference betzeen 'the better option' and 'hero worshipping'.

Maybe get it into your head what it is you are actually asking before you do so, as these are completely different things.

The only thing anyone needs to understand is that racism and misogyny exists equally in the U.S. and at very high levels. The conservative Christian movement has spent the past 40 years building a strong base and with trump at the helm they are giving it their all. I hope the country emerges stronger and with mechanisms in place that prevent this happening again. I’m utterly heartbroken about dismantling of a system of government that was meant to be “by the people and for the people”.

The base includes 'people' though, so these people have the right to vote their way, not yours?

Trump is far from perfect. But 1- Harris wasn’t elected in the Primary so she shouldn’t have been able to run for president anyway. 2- Trump has been doing exactly what he said he would do. 3- Kamala was going to pull the metaphorical trigger on things like men being able to compete in women’s sports and gender identity lessons for 6 year olds.
if you compare cities/states run by Democrats versus those run by Republicans in the US, the ones run by Republicans tend to be safer and financially better off.

it’s funny because President Trump gets a lot of flack for doing some of the same things that Obama did. For example, Obama deported way more people than Trump has. But there were no protests. No riots. And yes, Obama used ICE.
