Where to buy 0.5 reading glasses and are Amazon pairs safe?

So had my eye test, according to the optician I have eyes like a hawk for distance, but as I'm now 40 and use a lot of screens my eyes can get tired towards the end of the day, they suggested very weak reading glasses to use only if my eyes are tired towards the end of the day/evening.

My issue is everywhere I have checked that sell ready readers they typically start at 1.5+ (have found a couple of places that start at 1+) but I need 0.5+. I just really grudge paying over £20 from the likes of specsavers/glasses direct etc for such a weak prescription and occasional use, especially when you can typically pick up readers for a couple of pound.

I have seen packs on amazon that are reasonably priced but wondering if anyone has experience of these? Is there any chance they are not proper glasses or the right strength? Or will they be okay?

I've been wearing cheap Amazon readers for about 5 years now. I like having more than one pair. My optician knows that's what I'm using and he's fine with it. I am wearing them over my contact lenses so all I need is a bit of magnification when I'm doing close work.

Thanks, happy to hear someone is using amazon ones as they do have my strength, can get a 3 pack with blue light filter for under £10. Yeah my optician told me to just pick up cheap ones from home bargains or a chemist as he didn't feel it was worth buying proper prescription either.

I am usually quite sceptical of Amazon stuff but I wouldn't imagine that glasses could be unsafe - I wouldn't trust sunglasses from there to have the proper protection, and I'd be sceptical about the blue light filter (but the whole blue light thing was disproven, anyway).

As you say these products are sold cheaply in lots of places so I think the amazon ones are a reasonable choice in this case.

I have 3 Primark pairs, 2 at +1 and 1 at +3 for really small sewing. I think their range may start at +0.5? You have to hunt around a bit in store to find them, sometimes near whichever is the biggest set of tills.

Poundland.

In my experience, Boots reading glasses - not the prescription ones in their stand alone opticians - but the ‘off the shelf’ ones in most ordinary Boots branches - are the best of the non prescription options.

PullTheBricksDown · 18/03/2026 07:05

Home Bargains do the +0.5 ones.

Thanks. Tried boots first but they start at 1

Thank you everyone. I tried homebargains yesterday, that started at 1.5 in my store, boots started at 1. I will check primark and poundland and have ordered a pack from amazon to try. Thinking it will be good to have a few pairs so I can leave some in office/car/upstairs etc if I need them

I've tried many types over the years but these Amazon ones are excellent quality even have spring-loaded arms.

Ah - I've just seen this "Finding it harder to focus close up, at Opulize, we offer strengths +1 / +1.5 / +2.0 / +2.5 / +3.0 / +3.5" so it seems they won't do for you if you need 0.5, but I honestly recommend them to anyone. I've never scratched the lenses and they are tough enough to be wrenched regularly off my face and have their arms folded and refolded, in the less-than-careful baby hands of my little grandson who likes to play a little joke on me!

At £10 for three pairs, and a choice of colours and sizes (the blue is nicer than the tortoiseshell)

Amazon, Opulize reading glasses

Do Poundland ones start at 0.5, if they do I recommend them?

I’m sorry - I see your difficulty. Ha ha !! Hope you find what you need.

I dream of being able to get glasses for £20!

DaisyStarburst · 18/03/2026 11:52

I've got the Amazon ones, I keep a pair in each bag so I've got them when I need them. They're fine.
