Where would you put your postbox?

(I’ve attempted a drawing below - I am not, as will be clear, a natural artiste.)

Finished a big renovation of our house and we need to re-mount our postbox - I’m just not sure where! The front of the house at ground floor level is now covered with external insulation and brick slips - in theory you can drill right through them and into the blockwork, but I’m very wary of cracking the brick slips. The wall between us and the neighbour only comes up to about waist height and then there’s a wooden fence above it (belonging to the neighbour); we could fix it to the wall, but it would be rather low and not in an obvious place for delivery people to look. The other option is to attach it to the gate pillar at the front, facing out to the road - some neighbours do this and it looks good and is easy to find, but I’m worried people walking past might use it as a bin…

Any opinions? Or places I haven’t thought of?

Are you in the UK? Because the obvious question is how come not in the front door like most people?!
If that's not an option then I'd probably put in a wooden post and attach it to that in a suitable place depending on the floor material near the main door.

It’s a newish front door, they don’t tend to come with letterboxes as standard anymore (presumably for security reasons?) and we’ve had an external
box mounted on an outside wall for years. Just didn't factor in how the insulation and new brickwork would affect it! The wooden post is a good idea; we haven’t landscaped the garden yet so it would be easy to do…

Get a parcel size box while you're at it

I would personally just install a letter box in the door to be honest. I really don't think a door having a letter boxes is a security risk.

Depends where you live. It is not unheard of in some places for unpleasant or even dangerous substances to be pushed through.

My post box is next to my front door. The pavement abuts my front door. Not in a fabulous area but I don’t get rubbish etc out in the box and delivery people find it ok. So I would attach it to one of your pillars. Easy for everyone then.

Round here that just attracts people fishing with a coat hook for car keys!

Please please don't fix it to the house, will damage the integrity of the insulation layer that has been added. It will also provide a cold bridging point. A free-standing box on a post is alway a good option or one fixed to the gate post. Ask your neighbours if they have had any things popped in theirs!!

Letterboxes are being removed from front doors to improve the overall airtightness of our home. New high performance front doors are seen as a thermal element (like double/triple glazed windows) and come under the Building regulations)).

Either gate pillar or a free-standing post.
