Low effort carrot grater options for ME/CFS and easy washing

I have ME/CFS and need something for grating carrots that's both easy and low effort to use and easy and low effort to wash in a sink (we don't have a dishwasher). Does such a thing exist?

Have a look at Microplane graters with a finger guard.

A simple food processor with a grater disc. Just switch it on and drop the carrot in and it does the grating for you. There's a couple of bits to wash, but with carrot it should be fine with a quick rinse and drip dry.

I use a food processor. Easy to clean too. It also chops onions, grates cheese and I make homemade salsa in it too.

Mine is a Kenwood and you can unscrew the centre nub thing to get it clean.

Ah, thanks, the hand held ones look exhausting to use and the electric ones look exhausting to clean with all the different bits. I hadn't thought about just not washing it. I worry about that a bit even if it's just carrots.

I also would go for a food processor. Mine just needs a quick rinse after grating carrots. It’s a kenwood.

leftyberefty · 17/03/2026 19:31

I really don't think I'd have the energy to manually grate a carrot more than once or twice a year to be honest - I'm not a mild case unfortuantely.

Just buy grated carrot! Yes its way more expensive but there is no point knackering yourself out completely for bloody grated carrot! Just buy it.

leftyberefty · 17/03/2026 22:08

I've been trying to eat organic in an effort to avoid getting more ill but I do make exceptions sometimes. Maybe you're right and this should be one of them.

Oxo Julienne peeler? They are very easy and do the job in no time.

mynameiscalypso · 17/03/2026 22:20

I am in a similar situation. Grating/peeling is too much effort and pain for me. I generally buy ready chopped or ready grated vegetables. I know it’s not ideal but it’s better than not eating them in the first place. I think many people underestimate quite how hard it can be to do basic things like grate carrots when you have a chronic illness.

MewithME · 17/03/2026 22:34

I have one of these. Handy for small amounts. I manage to make coleslaw sometimes but I have mild MEcfs so I do understand that if you are moderate you need something as easy as possible.

Asda grated carrot

If I do my own, its really wet, theirs is really dry

Miskast · 17/03/2026 23:00

I think buying it grated is the best idea.

Otherwise maybe buy a mini food processor. I think it would be a lot less effort to wash than a full size one, simply because it'll take a quarter of the draining board rather than almost the whole thing. If you think of the whole job of washing up the day's things, something. small that can be left to drip dry with the plates is significantly less load. I'm with PP, carrots rinse away very cleanly. You also have the option of washing it by running it briefly with a little soap and water inside.

Kingdomofsleep · 18/03/2026 07:13

The skin is good for you. Soak them in water then lightly scrub with a clean washing up brush (have one you only use for scrubbing veg). No need to peel unless they're getting tired and wrinkly and mouldy. Try to eat them before they go like that.

Same applies to nearly all root veg - potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips etc

likelysuspect · 18/03/2026 07:35

I cant chop up hard veg at all, so where it is available ready chopped I buy it

You can get most things but not celeriac unfortunately.

I dont like the faff of my food processor

Lougle · 18/03/2026 07:37

A food processor takes seconds to grate carrot. A quick rinse under the tap is enough to clean it.

wisteriaarch · 18/03/2026 07:46

Do you have a dishwasher? A good food processor will have parts that you can just bung in for washing.
If you do enough for a few days that would be a good use of your limited energy

stayathomegardener · 18/03/2026 08:10

I have cfs and this would be a godsend for me.
I already have a kenward but it’s a weighty 1980’s beast.

Does anyone have a link for a high quality light weight option? Chopped onions would be the dream.

We also try and eat totally organically given the cancer links combined with the new use of roundup as a pre harvest desiccant.

There are so few words in the OP and yet you missed we don't have a dishwasher

MissingTrees · 18/03/2026 08:21

@stayathomegardener see my link in the post above yours, we posted at the same time. It's small so you can't do huge quantities but it's fine for two people.

hahabahbag · 18/03/2026 08:25

I have a mini processor with grating attachment. Came from mil who had severe arthritis and struggled to grate . Cleans easily though i admit I throw it in the dishwasher.

stayathomegardener · 18/03/2026 08:31
